As the weather is getting warmer, we were excited to take advantage of the lovely days and go out with our residents in the mini bus.

On Monday, our residents enjoyed a delightful road trip to the Honeywood Museum in Carshalton, singing along to their favourite songs along the way.

On Tuesday, some of our residents had a pleasant lunch at Toby Carvery, where they enjoyed a delicious roast with all the trimmings.

On Wednesday, one of our residents eagerly visited the post office to send a letter to her son in New Zealand.

At Amberley, we truly enjoy helping our residents fulfil their wishes. One of our residents shared her special wish to visit a Polish church for Easter and participate in traditional Polish Easter customs, just like she did growing up. Polish Easter traditions hold a special place in the heart, rooted in faith, family, and the blessing of food. Some cherished customs include painting eggs, blessing food baskets on Holy Saturday, and sharing a joyful Sunday breakfast.

Hot cross buns are a cherished Easter tradition, with origins dating back to 1361. Some believe their early form, called Alban buns, was made by a gentle monk named Brother Thomas Rocliffe at St Alban’s Abbey. Legend has it he shared them with those in need on Good Friday.

Picture these lovely treats, carried in wicker baskets and kept warm under a cloth — rows of soft, sweet buns flavored with allspice, each marked with a cross carved into the dough.

More recently, the cross on hot cross buns has often been made with flour paste, shortcrust pastry, or icing, but it remains a gentle reminder of their religious importance. By the 18th century, these tasty buns had become closely linked to Good Friday, a special day in the Christian calendar that remembers the crucifixion of Christ before his joyful Easter Sunday resurrection.

Our talented Head Chef, Gilroy, has made Hot Cross Buns using the IDDSI level, ensuring all our residents can enjoy participating in this meaningful tradition.

✨ Dysphagia-Friendly High Tea: Bringing Flavour, Joy & inclusion to the Table✨

We hosted a truly special Dysphagia High Tea, carefully designed for residents who require IDDSI Levels 4, 5, and 6. Every element of the afternoon was crafted to ensure safety without sacrificing taste, colour, or the joy of shared experience.

We created classic high‑tea favourites into beautifully presented, texture‑modified delights — from Level 4 puréed treats to Level 5 minced & moist bites and Level 6 soft & bite‑sized savouries. Each dish was thoughtfully created to awaken the senses and honour each resident’s individual needs, ensuring our residents could savour each bite with confidence

What made the afternoon truly magical was watching our residents’ palates come back to life. Faces lit up. Conversations flowed. Memories were sparked by familiar tastes they hadn’t been able to enjoy in a long time.

This wasn’t just about food it was about inclusion, dignity, and the simple pleasure of sharing something delicious together. For many, it was the first time in a long while they could enjoy a high‑tea experience that felt both indulgent and fully accessible.

A heartfelt thank you to Gilroy (Head Chef) and the kitchen team for their creativity, compassion, and commitment to person‑centred care. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do.. 🥰🫖🥮🍰
