🇬🇧🇵🇹 Why do funerals in the UK take so much longer than in Portugal?

It’s a question many have asked today as we mark the funeral of Portuguese International footballer Diogo Jota, held just a few days after his tragic death.

In Portugal, it’s common for funerals to take place within 24–48 hours, whereas here in the UK it can be 14-21 days or more. Why?

📜 We are bound by legal and official processes in the UK.
Before a funeral can take place here, the death must be formally registered. If the death was unexpected or unexplained, a coroner or post-mortem may also be required — and we cannot proceed until these investigations are completed. These processes are essential but can add days, even weeks, to the timeline.

🌡️ Climate & tradition — In Portugal’s warmer climate and Catholic culture, funerals have traditionally happened quickly, both for practical reasons and as a mark of respect.

🕊️ Time to plan — British funerals tend to be more personalised and elaborate, giving families time to gather, arrange a service, flowers, music and more.

📅 Availability — Crematoria and venues in the UK can also be very busy, which means waiting for the next available slot.

So while it can feel frustrating to wait so long here compared to places like Portugal, much of it comes down to law, authority, and culture — not choice.

Today’s service for Diogo Jota reminds us that no matter the timeline, what matters most is the honouring of a life.

🙏 Rest in peace, Diogo and André.

Today, on National Bereaved Parents Day, we pause to honor and remember all parents who have lost a child.

No words can truly capture the depth of that kind of loss, but today we stand in solidarity, love, and remembrance with those who carry that grief every single day. You are not alone and your child is not forgotten. 🕊️

To the parents who wake up each day with empty arms but full hearts — we see you, we honor you, and we send our deepest compassion your way today and every day.

Being a bit of a computer whizz & very technical minded I thought it was about time I switched to a form of software, instead of using the old fashioned “pen and paper” 📝

This is where Funeral Manager stepped in having been recommended to me by another independent funeral director in the area. Ruth, Will and their team have been extremely supportive, giving me intense training on how to use the system and there really isn’t anything it can not do! I’ve been absolutely loving using it to complete funeral arrangements and support families, with everything in one place it is so much more efficient!

Not only to make my life easier, centralise data and streamline processes, it also means full regulatory compliance and helping the planet by using less paper 🌍 ♻️

There is no greater privilege than being entrusted to take someone on their final journey.

It’s a responsibility we never take lightly. Behind every arrangement is a life lived, a family grieving, and a farewell that deserves to be personal, respectful, and meaningful.

⭐ Myself and the team had an NAFD inspection a couple of weeks ago and are very pleased to say that we passed with flying colours ⭐ (which for those that know us isn’t surprising!)

They were very impressed with the standards set throughout our funeral home, and the commitment we have made to providing families with the very best facilities and services possible.

Being a member of a society is important for any funeral director to maintain ethical standards, continue professional development and it also provides a network of support to allow for the provision of a better service all round.

Funeral directors provide a unique and indispensable role in society - which is why it’s so important you choose the correct one.
