C really enjoyed her physio last night, she works hard looking after children in a riding school so it was lovely to give her a pampering session to keep her supple and Comfortable.

Sometimes physio can seem like a non essential expense but it really does make a huge difference to the comfort of horses who aren't designed to carry riders but work so hard for us.

I think physio should be available to every horse that needs it in my area, so I am able to offer concessionary rates to people who need it and also good discounts for multiple horses on the same yard.

Must be within 45mins of Norton st Philip (BA2)

🟣Therapeutic Ultrasound 🟣

Therapeutic ultrasound is one of my go to modalities to use alongside the manual work I do as an animal physiotherapist.

It is different to diagnostic ultrasound in that is not used to create a picture for example during pregnancy or to diagnose tendon injuries, but rather is uses a different frequency of sound waves to stimulate deep muscles and soft tissue.

Using ultrasound allows me to access and raise the temperature of deep muscles that I wouldn't be able to access using my hands alone. Furthermore because of its penetrative nature it is able to selectively heat certain tissues such as ligaments and muscles, without heating the skin.

Raising the temperature of these tissues stimulates the metabolic function of cells and increases blood flow, which in turn has a wide range of healing effects such as:

• Increase Circulation

• Improved Blood Flow in post Tie-Up (Exertional Rhabdomyolysis)

• Wound Healing

• Increase Contractility of Muscle Fibers (to increase Range of Motion)

• Decrease Scar Tissue Formation

• Decreased Pain and Muscle Spasm

• Accelerated Wound Healing

• Decrease Inflammation and Edema

• Decrease Tendon and Ligament Inflammation

Please do get in touch if you would like to find out more or book in for a treatment.

I’m so excited to be getting back to work and setting up my practice again, now based in SOMERSET! I have loved exploring the area on foot with Zeus and Loki, and on horseback with Dickie and Trey, and now with Florence at School I’m very much looking forward to meeting new clients and colleagues in the area.

I am based in Faulkland, near Radstock, and will happily travel up to 45 minutes in any direction, which means my new area covers Frome, Bath, South Bristol, West Wiltshire and everywhere in between!

Obtaining Veterinary Referral / permission for your animal to receive complementary therapy treatment including Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Osteopathic.

I think this is an important thing to clarify, please don’t be confused or worried if you are asked for your vets contact details when booking your animal in for treatment.

It is illegal for any therapist to treat your horse or dog without obtaining permission from their vet. You may be asked to get a referral form filled in by your vet, or I may contact the vet directly myself. It won’t cost you anything, and it ensures that the therapist has all of the information necessary to give your animal the best treatment possible.

I am a member of the International Association of Animal Therapists (IAAT) and so take this very seriously.

If you have any questions about this or would like to request a vet form please get in touch and I’d be happy to help 😊

Thanks everyone!

This is a really clearly written article and worth a read if you are concerned about kissing spines or your horses back in general. Physiotherapy has fantastic results and often prevents the need for invasive surgery

Kissing spines has a reputation for causing severe back pain. For many horses diagnosed with this condition it isn’t always bad news, vet Laura Quiney, explains.

***YARD DAYS AVAILABLE ***

I have space for a couple of yard days in November, this is a full day at one yard treating up to 8 horses for a fixed price of £250.

It’s a great way to get your horse treated at a lower price than if I was coming to see a single horse, team up with friends or tie it in with a group ride/lesson (morning) and I can treat the horses afterwards.

Top line isn’t just for the professional horse.....we can all work with our horses to build up their back muscles whether it’s out on a hack, during groundwork or in the school. Here’s why....

Your horse’s spine consists of vertebrae strung together and supported by a complex muscle system that we commonly refer to as ‘topline’. In order to carry the weight of a rider, the horse must use well developed back and abdominal muscles to support and lift the spine. If these muscles are weak, the danger of a sagging spinal column increases which can lead to serious problems such as Kissing Spines.

Signs your horse may have a weak back:

1. He won’t track up
2. He may walk with his legs very close together
3. He may lack impulsion and straightness
4. He may dip behind the withers
5. His neck may appear concave
6. His back may be in spasm causing his spine to dip constantly and the skin either side of the spine will feel like you are tapping on a drum
7. His hip bones will appear pointy and the muscle surrounding them sunken.

If you are still working to increase the strength of your horses back it is important to get him/her treated regularly with physiotherapy in order to release any areas of tension and to ensure the muscles are working correctly and in harmony to build up strength. If the muscle groups aren’t working together due to spasm or bracing this can stop the muscles from building strength and inhibit even development.

If you would like me to send you a free sample exercise plan to get you on the right track for building your horses topline, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
