The Met Office and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have issued an amber cold-health alert for our area. It will be in effect from Tuesday 6th Jan 2026 until 11th January 2026.

With the drop in temperature, here are a few simple steps for people to keep themselves and their loved ones safe and well.

Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you.

Check the weather forecast and the news.

Make sure you have sufficient food and medicine.

Take simple measures to reduce draughts at home.

Heat rooms you spend most time in, to 18C if you can.

Keep bedroom windows closed.

Wear multiple layers of thinner clothing.

Cold weather makes us all more vulnerable to a range of winter illnesses such as flu, coughs, and colds. If you’re eligible, get vaccinated against flu and Covid-19.

Get help if needed. Call NHS 111 or in an emergency 999.

Did you know that up to 90 per cent of skin cancers are preventable by adopting simple sun-safe strategies?

Whatever your skin colour, staying safe in the sun reduces your chances of suffering from skin cancer and you can help prevent this by following four simple steps:

Avoid being in the sun from 11am to 3pm, the hottest part of the day.

Make sure you apply sun cream regularly and try never to get sunburn.

Your sun cream should have an SPF of at least factor 30, and a minimum of a four-star rating.

Wear a hat and stay covered up with suitable clothes and sunglasses.

You should also make sure you regularly check your skin for new moles, or for changes to existing ones. If you notice anything unusual always contact your GP straight away.
