Summer nearly killed me

I don’t mean the weather; although being a ginger with hypermobility, heat is basically hell.

I mean the school holidays.

I LOVE my son, he is a gorgeous, beautiful little monkey. He is funny and charming and wonderful.

He’s also mad as a box of frogs, he rarely walks, only runs and when he is in the house the word “mum” MUST be uttered at least 100 times a day.

He ALSO loves to put his nose right up to my nose and say “LoOk At mY bEaUtIfUl FaCe” because I laughed ONCE; so now it’s cemented for all eternity.

There is no order, no routine, there is lots of cuddling (which I try never to say no to because they’re only weany once), lots of mess, SO MUCH COOKING and WASHING.

I have to organise play dates and activities throughout a whole 6 weeks; try not to overspend and think constantly “how MUCH time AM I meant to leave for him to be bored?”

Along with, “I can’t give him jam tarts for breakfast… can I?”, “If I run to the bathroom will he notice me answering emails?” (The answer’s yes, they always notice) and my favourite “I should be enjoying this time more”

Over the 6 weeks I have done SO much… but you know what I haven’t done.

☺️ Had a calm routine
🥘 Eaten enough nutrients and fibre
🥤 Drunk enough water (it’s largely been coffee)
💤 Slept enough (probably the coffee)
🧘‍♀️ Had enough down time
🏋️‍♀️ Done more than 3 workouts
🚶‍♀️ Consistently hit 10,000 steps
✍️ The list goes on…

I have not had time for me.

And I KNOW our clients and members are the same.

It has been tough. I would wager MOST of you have fallen off the wagon you so excitedly had jumped on earlier in the year.

And you know what?

It does not matter. I care, but also… I don’t care! There’s no judgement here.

You and me can take a big deep breath because…

WE MADE IT TO SEPTEMBER 🔥

And September is OUR new year.

Let’s get that routine back, let’s get some predictability back, let’s get our SANITY back!

Because NOW is the time to get OUR priorities on track.

TODAY I’m on hydration.

I have actually been a marketing and sales professional for almost 13 years and my last role oversaw marketing and sales departments, training teams on it and managing commercial development and strategy; I have run my coaching in tandem with my corporate career for 10 years.

I’m running this because many of our members are new business owners and consistently ask me the same questions. In Peri/Menopause, poor sleep cranks up food noise and tanks your mood.

Yet 71% of UK adults report under 7 hours of sleep a night 👀

This came up in a session; I said I’d stupidly stayed up too late watching Black Panther.

Someone asked what time I went to bed.

I said “10:30” and the room FELL about 😂 they all thought I meant 2am; needless to say I got mercilessly mocked (karma, I think, for the lunges)

I get up at 5am, sometimes 4:30am.

I HAVE to be asleep at 10, or better 9:30, otherwise I miss my 7-8 hours…. And I feel awful.

If my sleep is interrupted ( 👋 peri, 👋 child, 👋 husband’s snores)…

🍬 I crave sugar
😡 I’m grumpy
😭 Tears are shed
🛋️ I’m sedentary
🥱 Hormones are a hot mess

This is not a sanctimonious “ooh I’m so good” post; because trust me I don’t do everything properly!

What I do prioritise, is SLEEP.

Why?

Well aside from my list above, not getting 7-9 hours of sleep increases your risk of diabetes, stroke, depression and more…

On top of all of that if you’re not sleeping enough you;

💪 won’t grow muscle as fast
🥘 will amplify food noise
🤦‍♀️ will increase menopause symptoms

Ick.

If you’re reading this, feeling like you’re being called out, don’t be, you’re in the majority of UK adults; but you can change that.

But I cannot express this enough, one of the BEST things you can do for yourself is prioritise sleep.

Get rest.

Follow good sleep hygiene (think consistent bedtime, no doom scrolling and a cold room.)

Will it ALWAYS work? No. But will it make a MASSIVE difference. Yes.

You will thank yourself, I PROMISE.

I get told I’m confident all the time; but I feel awkward in most situations.

My high energy masks an absolute monumental wall of “why did you just say THAT?!”

I often think “should I stand here, there, is sitting okay; is this right?”

When I have conversations I have to FOCUS on not fidgeting, having good posture, relaxing my shoulders and showing the person I’m listening; because I am listening.

It’s tiring at times, but it’s part of my life and actually, I don’t want to change it.

So why am I telling you this?

Because I get messages EVERY DAY saying “I’m worried I won’t fit in”

I get people say to me all the time “But you’re so confident”, “I’m too scared of the camera”, “I can’t talk to people, like you do”, “You always know what to say”

Did you know that 13 years ago I took a courses on Assertiveness and Confidence?

14 years ago I did MONTHS of communication training?

I have taken COUNTLESS sales courses?

I’ve read SO MANY books on psychology, communication and marketing?

That this page has been running for EIGHT years. That I did lives everyday for over a year because I wanted to get rid of the “OMG I’m going to be sick” feeling?

I have had to manually learn to do the things I do well, and even now I still have to tweak as I go.

There is nothing wrong with not having an innate confidence or social ability.

But we act like it’s a barrier that matters.

BE weird.

I’m weird!

I know I’m weird; people comment all the time. (And that’s even when I’m concentrating on passing as relatively normal!)

Do not let being an odd little urchin prevent you from doing what you love, or what you need.

You NEED to weightlift, but some of you reading this haven’t taken their first step, because they’re scared of not fitting in.

If you identify with this post you’ll have found your people. Everyone’s weird over here.

The classes are full of weird, the gym is full of weird, the digital communities are weird.

Why? Because I made them and I am … weird.

It’s wonderful.

In amongst the weird we’re funny, interesting, smart, endearing and silly.

🚧 ACCESS TO THE GYM DURING ROAD CLOSURE! 🚧

Great news; business as usual! Not only will the pedestrian access be open but so will the car park.

Cadent has popped in and confirmed that access will be open to Bramerton Road, which is the road to our car park.

We will not be able to drive down the opening of The Spa but there will be a diversion to Great Eastern Road (one road down) which will bring you out to The Spa, just before the station. From there you'll be able to turn left and access Bramerton Road. It will add 1-2 minutes to your journey.

If in doubt pop on your sat nav to SS5 4PJ and it will take you directly to Bramerton Road after following the diversion.

Anyone at the studio venue at Eldon Way will similarly have no problems for access, just follow the diversion from The Spa road block.

I’ll tell you the secret to weight loss past perimenopause.

Lean in.

You’re not going to like it though.

Eat your protein
Eat your fats
Drink 2L of water
Follow GREAT sleep hygiene
Walk 8,000-10,000 steps a day
Cut out alcohol
Cut out toxic people
Strength train

It’s not like in your 20s when you just ate dust and never slept.

You can’t do shots and dance in heels for hours (neither can your knees)

It’s SO annoying and it’s SO frustrating because EVERYTHING is different now.

But it’s also LIBERATING.

Do the GOOD stuff, it’s worth it!

Stop trying to be perfect, just be better.

I buy shop-bought bolognese sauce (sorry mum)

It’s got more sugar than homemade and has a couple of additives

But I know myself, I won’t do homemade, because I can’t be bothered and I’m tired.

If my only option is homemade, I will order a takeaway, just eat a bowl of cereal or dodge major nutritional needs.

So, this morning?

I threw, into my slow cooker, pre-chopped onions, a bag of tomatoes (didn’t chop them), a packet of mince (didn’t brown it first) and a jar of sauce.

It’s not perfect but it’s good enough.

Healthier than a takeaway
2 of my 5 a day
Cheap and cheerful
High protein
Shockingly tasty

But the best bit, it took me 5 minutes.

You do not need to be perfect, just do better than a takeaway.

You do not need to be perfect, just move more than no movement at all.

You do not need to be perfect, just drink some squash instead of no liquids.

Doing less sometimes means you’ll do more.

It's lonely feeling overweight. Lacking confidence and hating your reflection is no way to live. The never ending cycles of weight loss and weight gain, using the latest diets is just exhausting. You're probably here because you're sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

I know how you feel because I've felt that feeling too but now I coach sensational women to reclaim their confidence through weight loss. These amazing women have been where you are, questioning why this time it will be different, why this time the diet will be successful and sustainable.
