Julia had a meeting booked with the headteacher and SENCO when she got in touch with me. She wanted to make sure she went in feeling prepared and confident, so she could get the most out of the meeting and advocate effectively for her child.

We talked through her goals, planned what to say, and made sure she had everything she needed to feel in control of the conversation. The result? She got exactly what she was hoping for.

“I’m completely shocked we’ve not had to appeal it to be honest.”

That’s the message I received from Alison last week. Her child is in nursery and has a rare diagnosis of Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS), a condition that makes the school environment high risk without the right support.

I completed a parental request for an EHC Needs Assessment, which was accepted first time, and the Local Authority has now agreed to issue a draft EHCP. This is a huge step in ensuring Alison’s child has access to a learning environment that’s safe, supportive and appropriate to her needs.

Next, I’ll be carrying out a detailed EHCP check to make sure the draft is accurate, clear, and legally sound, so it truly reflects what this child needs to thrive.

We knew the nursery’s request for an EHC Needs Assessment wasn’t as strong as it needed to be, so we worked on a parental request to support it, ensuring the Local Authority had a clear case for assessment.

The result? A ‘YES’ from the Local Authority!
