As part of our water safety campaign this month, we'll be focusing on five key pieces of water safety advice this week that can help keep you safer on, in or near water and potentially avoid a 999 emergency.
#2 - Always supervise children
Just 2 inches of water is enough to cause drowning, especially as toddlers may not have the motor skills or body strength to lift themselves up. A child can slip under the water in as little as 20 seconds, and drowning is typically quiet and quick.
Buoyancy aids or inflatable toys can give a false sense of security as they can slip off, deflate or flip the child over. That’s why it’s critically important to always have an adult supervising children in or near water, without any distractions such as a phone or book.
