It's not uncommon for someone with dementia to be referred to a speech and language therapist (SALTs).

That's because as dementia progresses, difficulties in swallowing food (dysphagia) become more common.

A healthy balanced diet is important, however dysphagia can make it harder to the amount of nutritious food they need.

SALTs may help here by modifying the types, size and consistency of a person's food. They can also suggest nutritional alternatives such as juices or soups.

In the later stages, they are also likely to have more problems with communicating or understanding words and sentences.

SALTs can help through various exercises such as naming pictures, repeating words and teaching techniques that strengthen the muscles of the mouth.
