With cases of Bluetongue starting to appear across the country we would like to remind everyone that vaccines are available to help protect livestock.

It is worth noting that availability of these vaccines are currently good but if demand increases significantly due to increasing cases nationally and in Europe, we cannot guarantee supply when we really need it.

Please speak to one of the farm team about vaccination.

☀It’s that time of year where we need to be aware of heat stress in our livestock.
🌡When temperatures hit 22°C livestock will start to exhibit signs of heat stress. However, this is based on 60% humidity
which is the UK average. If we take into account different humidity levels plus many other factors such as bedding type, breed, system, wind speed etc. this temperature threshold for heat stress can
reduce dramatically.
Keep an eye on your livestock and be prepared with cooling systems.
☎ If you are concerned that any of your animals are being affected by the heat remember we are here 24/7 just call 01287 623802

📣Recently Dawn was invited to participate in a webinar “Breaking barriers: case studies on farmer engagement for effective parasite control” – organised by Elanco Animal Health.📽

This was to discuss the importance of effective communication between farmers and vets about parasite control.

What a great way to encourage and provide tips to vets to get that conversation started.

❓Did you know that Dawn is one of the few RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Sheep Health and Production in the country, alongside another of our other amazing vets Pippa? 🐑

If you would like to discuss parasite control please reach out and one of our team will be happy to help ☎01287 623802

As many of you will have been notified, Bluetongue restrictions in our area changed suddenly yesterday. This has implications for movements of livestock and movement outside of the zone requires the appropriate licence and in some cases testing.

Our farm team are working hard to answer all your inevitable queries, please see the links below for further information.

Following the identification of historic BTV-3 cases in cattle in Lancashire, the Restricted Zone (RZ) has now been extended to include Lancashire and the remaining part of North Yorkshire.

For details check the Bluetongue interactive map:
https://defra.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=514ec88edec74575958d860f0196d2ea and GOV.UK to see what steps you must take to prevent and control the disease: https://www.gov.uk/bluetongue.

Keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids and other ruminants must remain vigilant. Bluetongue is a notifiable disease and must be reported by law. You are not permitted to move any animal showing these clinical signs and if you see any of these signs you must report it to APHA. Animals should only be moved where it’s absolutely necessary. Please also follow the restrictions on animal and germinal product movements that apply - more information on the restrictions and licences is available on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue-movement-licences-and-designated-slaughterhouses.

Information about BTV-3 vaccinations is also available on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/bluetongue-serotype-3-btv-3-vaccine-permits.

Many of our clients are understandably concerned about the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease in the UK due to increasing media coverage.

Due to the rising number FMD cases across Europe, as of the 23rd April the Government has increased the risk of the disease entering the UK to ‘medium’.

This means that international travellers are no longer allowed to bring meat or dairy products from cattle, sheep, goat, and pigs from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use. Trade of wholesale products with Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria is also currently restricted.

There have been no reported cases within the UK, but we encourage you to continue with good levels of biosecurity with particular focus on people, shared equipment and movement of animals.

Please speak to one of our team or give the practice a call if you have any concerns or would like to review your biosecurity plan

What a fantastic turnout to our latest farmer meeting last night discussing beef fertility and the benefits of synchronisation and AI.

Thank you all for coming and for the fantastic discussions you generated.

Only a few benefits of synchronisation and AI include:
- Tighter calving block
- pulling late calvers back into the group
- Introducing new genetics, including the ability to select for traits which matter to you
- A reduced number of bulls to keep
- Higher weaning weights and more profit

Chat to one of our experienced team if you’d like to hear more about what we can offer in this area…
