A lovely morning spent at one of our partner schools, sitting down with parents over coffee to talk about Occupational Therapy and what a typical session actually looks like.

We worked through some of the simple activities we often use, such as, pencil grips and handwriting warm-ups, fine motor games with pegs and tweezers, and a few sensory tools that can help children settle and focus. Parents had a chance to try the equipment for themselves and see how small ideas can translate into everyday routines at home.

There was plenty of time for questions, handouts to take away, and honest conversation about what support can look like for different children.

Sessions like these are a reminder that parents don't need to be experts, they just need space to ask, explore, and understand what is happening in their child's Occupational Therapy work.

If your school would like us to run a parent coffee morning, we would love to hear from you.

After a brain injury, everyday things that once felt automatic, like making a cup of tea, getting dressed, planning the day, can suddenly feel unfamiliar or exhausting. Families often notice it too, and aren't always sure where to turn.

Occupational Therapy supports adults to rebuild independence in a way that fits their life. That might mean relearning daily routines at a manageable pace, finding practical strategies for fatigue and concentration, adapting the home, or slowly reconnecting with the roles and activities that matter most.

Every person is different, so support is shaped around individual goals rather than a fixed programme.
If someone you care about is navigating life after a brain injury, we are happy to talk through how Occupational Therapy could help.

When your client chooses a Simpsons theme for their energy meter, you go with it πŸ†

This pocket-sized tool was co-created with a young person as part of their Occupational Therapy programme. They chose the theme themselves and independently matched each Simpsons character to an energy level, based on how they perceived each character to present. That step alone is significant as it shows a real capacity for observing and describing emotional and physical states in others, and then connecting those observations to their own experience.

The energy meter is adapted from the Autism Level Up resource and is designed to support awareness of how the body feels at different points throughout the day, and to help identify the level of alertness that is most useful for different tasks.

The next step is building a personalised power pack. This a set of alerting and regulating activities that can support moving between energy levels when needed.

Tools like this work because they are built around the individual. The theme, the characters, the language ... all chosen by the young person themselves. That ownership matters.

Does your child use any tools like this to support their self-regulation?
We would love to hear about what works for your family.

Such a wonderful win of the week for Sara, our Occupational Therapy Service Lead, whose client thanked her with the most beautiful flowers cut from their own garden.

This wonderful gesture reminds us of the impact that Occupational Therapy Services have on improving the lives of people, whether it be a child with additional needs, or an adult navigating a post-brain injury life.

A message from Emer, who has just completed her final placement with us at Manchester Occupational Therapy Services πŸ’š

"My name is Emer, and I have just had my eight-week final placement here at Manchester Occupational Therapy Services as an Occupational Therapy student on the MSc programme at Manchester Metropolitan University.

It has been an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience. I have had the opportunity to spend time with multiple members of the team, guided and supported throughout to grow my professional skills. During my placement, I delivered a range of interventions tailored to meet the individual needs of children, which greatly enhanced both my practical skills and my confidence.

I particularly enjoyed building meaningful relationships with children, supporting their development through engaging, child-centered approaches, and working closely within school environments to support their participation in everyday activities.

Paediatrics is a specialised area of practice that can be demanding in terms of workload and responsibility, but this experience has given me a realistic insight into life as a practitioner and helped me develop essential skills in time management and organisation.

The whole team have been so welcoming and supportive throughout, sharing their knowledge generously with me. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience . I am now one step closer to qualifying, and this placement has reinforced my passion for working in paediatrics."

All the team at wish Emer every success as she moves towards qualifying to be an Occupational Therapist. It has been a genuine pleasure to have her with us.

This might look like Kate just having fun at work (and we hope she is 😍)… but there’s actually a lot more going on here.

She’s using a platform swing, which is a really important piece of equipment in Occupational Therapy , designed to support children who need help with sensory processing.

In simple terms, some children find it harder to process and respond to what their body is feeling. This can show up as:
β€’ Feeling constantly on the go
β€’ Struggling to sit still
β€’ Becoming easily overwhelmed
β€’ Finding it hard to focus

The platform swing works by giving input to the vestibular system.
That’s the part of the body that helps with balance, movement, and knowing where we are in space.

When used in the right way, this type of movement can:
β€’ Help calm the nervous system
β€’ Improve focus and attention
β€’ Support body awareness
β€’ Help a child feel more regulated

So while it looks like play…
It’s actually carefully guided, purposeful therapy.

And for many children, it can make a big difference to how they feel, move, and engage in everyday activities.

Have you ever noticed your child becoming calmer after movement like swinging or spinning? Let us know below πŸ‘‡

Recovery after an accident can affect far more than the visible injury.

For one of our adult clients, rehabilitation is focusing on weakness in her right upper limb, altered sensation, and reduced dexterity, all of which have been affecting her ability to manage everyday tasks independently.

As part of her Occupational Therapy goals, she is working through a structured rehabilitation programme that combines targeted exercises with functional, real-life activities designed to support a gradual return to independence.

To track her progress over time, we completed the Nine-Hole Peg Test today. This is a well-validated assessment of fine motor dexterity and hand function. By establishing a baseline now, we can measure how her function changes throughout the course of her therapy and adjust our approach accordingly.

Rehabilitation work like this is methodical and patient. Every small improvement in function can mean greater independence and a return to the daily activities that matter most.

If you or someone you know is recovering from an injury and finding everyday tasks difficult, we would be glad to talk about how Occupational Therapy might help.

Being able to name how you feel is one of the first steps towards being able to manage it.

Our emotional regulation group sessions give children a supported space to explore, identify, and talk about emotions, using creative, engaging activities that make the work feel accessible and genuinely enjoyable.

In this session, children worked with emotion character cards to explore a wide range of feelings, and then designed their own Mood Monsters - a personal and imaginative way to bring emotions to life and give them a name πŸ₯°

Creating something like a Mood Monster can help children feel a real sense of ownership over their emotional vocabulary. Rather than being told what emotions look like, they get to decide for themselves.

Emotional regulation is a foundational skill. When children have language for how they feel (and strategies to support them) it can make a real difference to how they manage at school, in their relationships, and in everyday life.

If you feel your child would benefit from this kind of support, please get in touch.

A special anniversary to share this week πŸŽ‰

Karen Hill has been part of the Manchester Occupational Therapy Services team for one whole year.

Karen qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1994 and brings decades of experience working with adults in both hospital and community settings. Her special interest is Acquired Neurological Conditions, and she is Bobath trained with a Masters module in Stroke Rehabilitation Evidence Based Practice.

Karen is also a Student Educator, helping to shape the Occupational Therapists of the future.

What we love about working alongside Karen is the way she supports clients to focus on quality of life and the everyday activities that matter most to them, whether that is something very practical at home or a meaningful return to the things they love.

Outside of work, Karen is usually spending time with family and friends, or out on a run - she is a dedicated runner and a much-loved member of our team.
Thank you, Karen, for everything you have brought to us this year πŸ†

Earlier this month, some of our team had the privilege of volunteering at Friendly Fridays - a community event bringing together people of all ages and abilities for a day of activities, connection, and creativity during the Easter half term.

Angela, James and Emer spent the day helping to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, supporting attendees across Lego building, arts and crafts, board games, and outdoor time in the park.

Events like this are a reminder of what Occupational Therapy is really about: participation, connection, and the everyday activities that make life meaningful... for everyone πŸ’š

A big thank you to the Friendly Fridays team for welcoming us. It was a genuinely brilliant day.
