👂 Did you know there are actually FOUR different types of ear infection — and each one can affect your hearing differently?

Most people assume an ear infection means a bit of pain that clears up in a few days. But for some, the hearing loss lingers long after the infection has gone.
Here's what to know:

🔵 Outer ear infection (otitis externa) — often causes muffled hearing and discharge; usually clears once the infection does
🔵 Middle ear infection (otitis media) — very common in adults; can cause pain, pressure, and temporary hearing loss
🔵 Glue ear — thick fluid behind the eardrum; often painless but can affect hearing for weeks or even months
🔵 Inner ear infection (labyrinthitis) — can cause sudden hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus; always worth seeing a GP

If your hearing hasn't bounced back after an ear infection, don't just wait and hope. A proper hearing check can make a real difference — and ours are completely free.

Is your hearing loss temporary or permanent? Here's how to tell the difference.

When you notice your hearing isn't quite right, one crucial question matters: can it be reversed? Understanding the difference between temporary and permanent hearing loss affects your treatment options and outcomes – and knowing the signs could save your hearing.

Signs it might be TEMPORARY:
✅ Sudden onset after a concert, flight, or cold
✅ Feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear
✅ Pain or discomfort alongside hearing loss
✅ Affects just one ear
✅ Recent illness or medication changes

Signs it might be PERMANENT:
🔴 Gradual decline over months or years
🔴 Struggling with high-frequency sounds (speech sounds "mumbled")
🔴 Persistent tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
🔴 No obvious triggering event
🔴 Affects both ears, especially if you're over 50

URGENT: Sudden hearing loss in one ear is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment within 72 hours can make the difference between recovery and permanent loss.

The good news? Temporary hearing loss often resolves with proper treatment (removing wax, treating infections).

Permanent hearing loss is highly manageable with modern hearing aids – they're sophisticated, discreet, and genuinely life-changing.

The sooner you address it, the better your brain adapts.

Bottom line: Professional assessment is essential. You can't reliably diagnose yourself, and waiting helps no one. Whether temporary or permanent, there are solutions.

Ever notice a crackling sound in your ear when you swallow, yawn, or chew? You're not imagining it — and you're definitely not alone. 👂

Here's what could be behind it:
*Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) — when the tiny tube connecting your middle ear to your throat doesn't open or close properly, often triggered by a cold, sinusitis, or allergies
*Earwax buildup — especially if you've been using cotton buds (which can actually push wax deeper in)
*A middle ear infection (acute otitis media) — which can cause fluid build-up and that distinctive crackling sensation
*Middle ear myoclonus — a rare condition where tiny muscles in the ear spasm
*TMJ disorder — yes, your jaw joint can affect your ears too!

Most of the time, crackling in the ear is nothing serious and settles on its own. But if it's persistent, worsening, or comes with pain, discharge, or muffled hearing — it's time to speak to your GP. 🩺

You wake up, try to get out of bed, and suddenly the entire room is spinning violently. You can't stand, you feel desperately sick, and any movement makes it worse - this is vestibular neuritis, and it's genuinely frightening when it happens.

Caused by inflammation of the nerve connecting your inner ear to your brain (usually from a viral infection), it triggers severe vertigo that sends people to A&E convinced they're having a stroke. The good news: whilst horrible to experience, it's not dangerous.

The acute spinning lasts 1-3 days, full recovery takes 3-6 months, and vestibular rehabilitation exercises help your brain adapt faster. Our latest article explains what vestibular neuritis feels like, how it's different from labyrinthitis, and when to seek urgent help

Most people don't think about their ears until something goes wrong, but many hearing problems are entirely preventable. The damage just needs to be stopped before it happens.

From the 60/60 rule for headphone use (60 minutes max at 60% volume) to never using cotton buds inside your ears, these simple habits protect your hearing for decades.

Our article covers 10 practical ways to keep your ears healthy, including wearing hearing protection above 85 decibels, using sunscreen on your ears, managing stress that affects blood flow, and getting regular hearing tests - especially important after 50 when 40% of people have some hearing loss, rising to 70% by age 70.

That muffled, blocked feeling after a swim or shower? It's more common than you think — and it doesn't always clear up on its own. 🌊👂

Here's what you need to know about water in the ears:

*Water can get trapped in the narrow curve of the ear canal — even after a shower, not just a swim
*Symptoms include muffled hearing, a feeling of pressure, and a faint crackling when you swallow or yawn
*If moisture lingers too long, it can create the perfect conditions for bacteria — leading to swimmer's ear (otitis externa)
*That "watery" feeling isn't always water — it could be tinnitus, earwax, or fluid behind the eardrum
*If symptoms last more than a couple of days, or you notice pain, discharge, or itching, it's time to see your GP

Your ears are more delicate than they get credit for. Don't ignore the signs. 🩺

Nearly half of UK adults feel hearing aids haven't been accepted by society the way glasses have, and almost one-fifth worry they'll look old wearing them.

But here's the reality: struggling to hear, constantly asking people to repeat themselves, and withdrawing from social situations are far more noticeable than wearing modern hearing aids.

Today's devices are virtually invisible, connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, recharge overnight like your phone, and research shows users report genuine improvements in their confidence, social lives, and relationships.

Our article explains why modern hearing aid technology is nothing like you remember.
