Rest isn’t a reward for finishing everything.
If that were the rule,
you’d never get it.

***What can high-functioning anxiety look like?***

A lot of high-functioning anxiety looks like you are handling everything, a superhero, or that graceful swan gliding through the water, paddling frantically below the surface. It may manifest as...

• Being the constantly "reliable" one
• Being thoughtful
• Being prepared

And quietly feeling on edge the entire time.

It’s not that you “can’t switch off”, it’s that your mind has learned that it’s safer to stay on.

This is something that we covered in group yesterday.

Reframing our anxiety experience is essential in learning that our nervous system is not the enemy, but is actually desperately trying to keep us safe.

Let's not go into battle, let's create an environment of safety.

So I’ve gone and turned the heating timer off in my house today. Fully expecting the weather gods to take that personally and hit us with cold & rain out of nowhere, so if it does - sorry all! 😂

A big proportion of my clients are adults with a late ADHD diagnosis.

They can visit me for many different reasons, but one theme I see time and time again is the self-criticism, judgement and low-self esteem created by a lifetime of feeling "different", "wrong", "unreliable" or "bad".

Sometimes the issue isn’t that you’re disorganised, or that you can't finish (or even start) tasks, or you are too easily overwhelmed.
It’s that your brain doesn’t respond to systems that were never designed for it.

It's so important to start our work together through a new lens of self-compassion, acceptance and validation.

We can spend days, months, or even years trying to make sense of the "why" we're feeling anxious, low or overwhelmed. But sometimes there is no big "why".

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from overthinking every small decision all day long.

It adds up.

Some of us have never learned to rest.
Instead we learned to stop just before we collapse.
There’s a difference.

Rest isn't a reward, it's a priority.

Look at the sight I saw on my walk today.

Get outside, catch some sun, and see those bluebells if you can, your nervous system will thank you for it!

The biggest part of my job is to meet people where they are, no judgement, but with kindness & compassion (hopefully anyway!).

It never fails to surprise me however, how often people are uncomfortable with being treated kindly.

If this feels familiar, don"t worry, receiving kindness is certainly a skill that can be developed.

A full day today, and the topic of patterns of protection has come up a fair bit today. These are those ways that we've coped in the past just to get through, that now keep showing up in our present.

These are not behaviours that we should shame ourselves for. But it is important to realise that you’re allowed to outgrow versions of yourself that kept you safe once.

Are there ahy patterns you would like to let go of?
