While the current industrial action by resident doctors has now ended, our hospital remains very busy as we work to recover services. Please only attend the Emergency Department if your medical need is urgent and instead use services such as NHS 111 online, local pharmacies, your GP and minor injury units. For the next six days our hospital will be affected by Resident Doctor industrial action.

We want to help you get the care you need during this period. If you’re feeling unwell, please use NHS 111 online to be directed to the most appropriate service and only visit our emergency department if your medical need is life-threatening. Urgent treatment centres, pharmacies, your GP or minor injury units will often be able to help offer advice and treatment for less urgent medical issues.

Please attend appointments unless we have contacted you to re-arrange and use our traffic light system for Emergency Department alternatives if you have a medical need. This could save you valuable time waiting in ED.

Today, we were delighted to welcome Stephen Kinnock, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care for the official opening of our new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Belfry Shopping Centre, Redhill.

We were also joined by key partners on the project, the first patients of the CDC, and some of our teams, for a tour of the new facility and the special ribbon cutting moment with the Minister and Andrew Hines, our Chief Executive.

In its first 8 weeks the new CDC has seen almost 1,400 patients who would've otherwise had to travel to other sites and will ensure quicker access to diagnostic tests for thousands more in the years ahead - supporting better outcomes for our local communities

Thank you for your comments on our East Surrey UTC plans. Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

1. Why can’t this funding be used for Crawley Hospital’s Urgent Treatment Centre or Horsham Minor Injuries Unit?

NHS England’s policy expects every Hospital with an Emergency Department to have a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre. We are currently one of the few Trusts without this in place. This capital investment will bring us in line with national direction.

Both UTC and MIU services at Crawley and Horsham Hospitals are managed by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. We do not manage these units. While we provide some services on these sites, we are not responsible for the Urgent Treatment Centres or Minor Injury Units. A full list of our services is available on our website.

2. Where will the new building be located?

We have done a complete options appraisal of our full hospital site and the preferred option is the main entrance, next to the ambulance bays, in the area currently used for disabled parking.

3. What will happen to the disabled parking bays?

They will be relocated close to the new building and we are looking carefully at the best accessibility for those who need these spaces. The final location will be confirmed in the final design.

4. Why can’t Crawley A&E be reinstated?

Crawley Hospital is managed by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

Decisions about A&E services at this site are not made by SASH. As per point one.

5. Why can’t this money be used for equipment or more staff?

This is capital funding from NHS England that we applied for. It is specifically allocated for the purposes of building a UTC in line with NHSE direction of travel to have a UTC co-located with EDs. It can only be used for buildings and infrastructure. It cannot be used for staffing, equipment, or day-to-day services.

6. Why can’t the UTC be built somewhere else?

In addition to point one, building elsewhere would require buying additional land and developing new infrastructure. This would not be operationally practical and would cost significantly more than the funding available.

7. Will Crawley UTC close as a result of this?

Crawley Hospital is managed by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. Decisions about UTC services at Crawley are not made by SASH. Although, we aren’t aware of plans for its closure.

We are pleased to announce plans for a new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill!

The purpose-built UTC will sit alongside the Emergency Department, creating a single front door for people with non-life-threatening emergencies. It will offer faster assessment, diagnosis and treatment in one place, while freeing up space in the main hospital to expand Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

Backed by £8.6m of NHS England capital investment, the new two-storey building is at the final design stage. Subject to approval, construction is expected to start this summer, with the service opening in the second half of 2027.

This development will help reduce Emergency Department pressures, cut waiting times and support more patients to return home the same day, improving urgent care for East Surrey and surrounding communities.
