I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all well at this time of year. It can be a wonderful period for many of us, but also a tough one. Grief, estrangement, financial difficulties, etc, can all be highlighted at this time, and makes having a 'Happy Christmas' seem so insignificant.

The media and shops are full of forced festive cheer, and imply that you can only have a great Christmas if you're surrounded by dozens of people and a lot of money is spent.

Why am I talking about this here? I think it's to remind you that just paying attention to that friend, colleague, or neighbour who has been through a rough time, or acting out of sorts. An act of kindness such as asking if they are ok, or what's happened, rather than a 'Cheer Up' or 'Merry Christmas' could make all the difference to them.

I hope you all have a Christmas that fits in with how you are at the moment.

Yesterday, as part of my associate lecturer role with the Cornwall Counselling Institute, I was working with the Level 4 Advanced Certificate students on skills practice. I gave some advice 'In my opinion, the job of someone's counsellor is to give their client a voice; to create an environment in which the client can freely talk about what is truly going on for them.'

For me, this is paramount, and at the heart of my practice.
