*ARE YOU GETTING THE MOST OUT OF TREATMENT?*

When making an appointment with your musculoskeletal practitioner, there are some things you can consider to maximise the benefits of treatment for your horse.

πŸ’™ WORMING & VACCINATION
Vaccination and worming should not be carried out in the 7 days prior to treatment. This gives their bodies chance to normalise after vaccination or worming.

πŸ’™ SADDLE FITTING
If you are having a saddle fitting at a similar time, treatment is best carried out beforehand. This is because the muscles down either side of the spine can expand following treatment.

πŸ’™ DENTAL APPOINTMENT
If you are also having a dental appointment for your horse, treatment is best carried out afterwards. This will help to relax the jaw & poll.

I hope this helps! πŸ₯°

*IS YOUR HORSE GETTING ENOUGH VITAMIN E?*

I'm seeing several horses this summer with vitamin E deficiencies. Horses naturally obtain their vitamin E from fresh green material, predominantly grass, and with the prolonged dry summer we're experiencing, the grass is simply not there.

Vitamin E is used in nerve and muscle function; so as we increase the workload of our horses through the summer months, they require greater amounts of vitamin E. Many are simply not getting enough from their balancers alone.

Some of the symptoms being experienced are:
πŸ’™ Dry eye 'bogies'
🐴 Weeping eyes
πŸ’™ Sore, tense muscles
🐴 Slow recovery rates after performance
πŸ’™ Irritability & grumpiness
🐴 Dull coat
πŸ’™ Changes in hoof growth patterns

Horses may only show some of these symptoms.

Vitamin E deficiency can only be diagnosed by a vet and this is usually done via a blood test.

Talk to your vet or a qualified nutritionist to ensure that your horse is getting enough vitamin E. πŸ‘

On Friday, I was pleased to be accompanied by Kirsten Smith Veterinary Physiotherapy as I visited some of my lovely clients to show her a little about what chiropractic entails. I'm very much looking forward to being able to join Kirsten soon and gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of physiotherapy and how it can compliment chiropractic treatment.

We're on a roll at the moment getting our ponies out and about...

Meet our yearling Exmoor c**t, Syd. He had his first outing yesterday to Praze Fair Show, one of our very favourite local agricultural shows. Syd took everything in his stride, winning a strong youngstock class and standing reserve M&M Champion. ❀️

It was lovely to see lots of clients at the show and especially nice that we stood reserve to Sophie and her beautiful Connemara mare, Khaleesi. πŸŽ‰ Special thanks to Heather for providing our transport. ❀️

Good luck to everybody competing at Stithians Show tomorrow! πŸ€ It's a particularly exciting day for me as I start my new job (many of you know I have multiple jobs πŸ™ˆ). More on that after the show...

Thank you to everyone who has worked around the limited availability because I've had a week off.

I've been judging Exmoor ponies at the Great Yorkshire Show - what an absolute honour it has been! 🀩 I also absolutely fell in love with the beautiful Yorkshire Dales- what a special place. ❀️

I'll be back to normal next week - I have a couple of spaces available in Truro & St Austell area on Thursday morning. Inbox me to book! πŸ™Œ

The post I've been dreading πŸ˜”. It's time to find Ben a new home, he's not getting ridden much and he's bored! Zara's been keeping him ticking over and getting out once a week but it's not enough, he's bored and getting fat (a very good doer!). Zara's got Endurance goals and been concentrating on riding Mister, so Ben needs a new rider... Ben's 7 this year, a registered Welsh B and a full up 13.2hh, a good old fashioned sort with a leg in each corner! He's mainly done hacking and Endurance which he loves, he can jump but needs a good confident jockey (jumping isn't Zara thing!). He's okay in traffic but we have quiet country lanes, so don't meet big fast traffic. Now Benjamin can be a cheeky so and so, he can get strong and put in the odd buck, run out at jumps etc, so not a 1st pony. He's not a big fan of schooling but tbh he hasn't done a lot. He's been to a show and did well in hand, we got some lovely feedback! I've always said he'd make a fab hunter pony, it's just not something Zara's interested in.. Sadly Ben hasn't been able to progress in Endurance as he finds the heavy workload too much and can go slightly lame behind after a several rides, am happy to discuss this and our Vets feedback after x-ray's etc but he's been fine hacking and pleasure rides, lower level riding (Just not multiple 30km+). He loves a fuss, is great to shoe, clip, rug, load, travel etc. We're looking for a long term loan home, with the possibility to buy at a later date, we need to make sure he's got the right home, as we love him πŸ’™.

It's been a while since I ran an update on Grace... Well, she's doing amazing - fitness is building beautifully, she's dropped several dress sizes (!) and last night, we had a go at dressage! 😍

It was only a walk & trot test as her canter is still dreadfully unbalanced. I had to be brave as she was very on her toes, but after initially being scared of the white boards, she and I got braver and braver and we finished 3rd with 66+%! 🀩

It was wonderful to catch up with many of my lovely friends and clients too.

πŸ“· Picture thanks to my wonderful husband & groom, Jon, who really helped me be brave enough to get on board when Grace was giving her best Welsh Dragon...!

IS YOUR SHOW HORSE HEALTHY?

One of my ambitions this summer was to ride our Welsh Cob, Sam, at a county show and he was originally entered at Devon County Show. Preparation was going well, but to do well in the show ring, he needed to put more weight on, so we fed him up a little bit. I noticed this really affected his stamina - and he wasn't even fully up to 'show weight'. So, I chose not to take him and we worked that weight off him again. 😳

By a slight twist of fate, Sam was a last minute substitution at Royal Cornwall Show. We hadn't entered him as this show as I felt it was a big atmosphere for him to cope with and he's a real novice in competition - he had last attended the show 12 years ago as a 3 year old c**t, where he won in-hand but it really blew his mind!

Anyway, we thought we'd have a go and see how he managed. He actually exceeded all my expectations - he coped well, came back to me when he got worried or spooked and actually had moments of brilliance during his performance. 😍 The class was judged by two Mountain & Moorland judges and rightly so, Sam was placed 6th and last. However, there was also a vet in the ring who was conducting an independent assessment of each Welsh Cob and their body condition. To my absolute delight, Sam was awarded the The Horse Trust's Healthiest Body Condition Awards and I can't tell you how proud I am of this! πŸ₯° It was a lovely reminder that my little horse is healthy and this really is the most important thing.
