🌟 Panelist 3 for our Rider Weight talk - Jenna Payne - McTimoney Veterinary Chiropractor, who will also be presenting her research 🌟

Jenna is a McTimoney Veterinary Chiropractor and equestrian researcher whose work examines the vital link between rider weight and the welfare of native ponies. Her master’s research—rooted in her experience with her own Exmoor ponies—investigates how rider-to-pony weight ratios affect performance and wellbeing, combining academic rigour with a deep commitment to evidence-based horsemanship.

Alongside her chiropractic practice, Jenna is Chief Executive of the Association of Show and Agricultural Organisations (ASAO), representing agricultural shows across the UK. Since entering the sector in 2016, she has championed high welfare standards, and her research has already informed rule changes within national equestrian bodies.

Before transitioning into executive leadership, Jenna produced native ponies to county and Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) level, earning a reputation for calm, welfare-focused horsemanship. Her family remains closely involved with Britain’s native breeds, competing across disciplines and preserving traditional heritage skills.

With her combined scientific training, industry insight and advanced understanding of the equine musculoskeletal system, Jenna brings a uniquely informed perspective to the care, performance and responsible stewardship of horses and ponies across all breeds.

*IS YOUR HORSE EXPERIENCING SEASONAL CHANGES?*

As the seasons shift, our horses feel it just as much as we do — sometimes even more deeply. 🐴✨

There are many factors at this time of year that can affect their physical and emotional wellbeing:

💙 Temperature changes
🐴 Fewer daylight hours
💙Coat changes and clipping
🐴 Rugging
💙 Altered routines
🐴 Changes in the grazing and turnout availability
💙 Amount of exercise offered

You might notice your horse becoming a little more tense, reactive, or flat in their energy. These changes aren’t just behavioral — they can be a reflection of how their body is adapting to new conditions. Tight muscles, altered posture, or subtle changes in movement patterns can create discomfort that affects mood and connection.

Let’s remember that wellbeing is whole-body health: body, mind and spirit. 🌿 A little extra time, patience and care can go a long way in helping them feel their best as we move towards winter. 🍁

*ARE YOU GETTING THE MOST OUT OF TREATMENT?*

When making an appointment with your musculoskeletal practitioner, there are some things you can consider to maximise the benefits of treatment for your horse.

💙 WORMING & VACCINATION
Vaccination and worming should not be carried out in the 7 days prior to treatment. This gives their bodies chance to normalise after vaccination or worming.

💙 SADDLE FITTING
If you are having a saddle fitting at a similar time, treatment is best carried out beforehand. This is because the muscles down either side of the spine can expand following treatment.

💙 DENTAL APPOINTMENT
If you are also having a dental appointment for your horse, treatment is best carried out afterwards. This will help to relax the jaw & poll.

I hope this helps! 🥰

*IS YOUR HORSE GETTING ENOUGH VITAMIN E?*

I'm seeing several horses this summer with vitamin E deficiencies. Horses naturally obtain their vitamin E from fresh green material, predominantly grass, and with the prolonged dry summer we're experiencing, the grass is simply not there.

Vitamin E is used in nerve and muscle function; so as we increase the workload of our horses through the summer months, they require greater amounts of vitamin E. Many are simply not getting enough from their balancers alone.

Some of the symptoms being experienced are:
💙 Dry eye 'bogies'
🐴 Weeping eyes
💙 Sore, tense muscles
🐴 Slow recovery rates after performance
💙 Irritability & grumpiness
🐴 Dull coat
💙 Changes in hoof growth patterns

Horses may only show some of these symptoms.

Vitamin E deficiency can only be diagnosed by a vet and this is usually done via a blood test.

Talk to your vet or a qualified nutritionist to ensure that your horse is getting enough vitamin E. 👍

On Friday, I was pleased to be accompanied by Kirsten Smith Veterinary Physiotherapy as I visited some of my lovely clients to show her a little about what chiropractic entails. I'm very much looking forward to being able to join Kirsten soon and gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of physiotherapy and how it can compliment chiropractic treatment.
