Why do Funeral Directors Walk in Front of a Hearse? 🎩

At Cornwall Funeral Services, one of the most symbolic moments during a funeral is when the funeral director walks in front of the hearse. Known as "paging", this gesture is more than tradition—it’s a meaningful act of respect, reflection, and reverence.

But where does it come from?
This custom dates back to the days of horse-drawn hearses, when a funeral director would lead the cortege on foot through village streets, ensuring a steady pace and showing dignity throughout the journey. It was a public acknowledgement of a death in the community—a quiet invitation for others to stop, bow their heads, and pay their respects.

Today, we uphold this tradition for the very same reasons:
– To create a moment of stillness and solemnity
– To lead the farewell with care and dignity
– And to honour the unique life of the person we are accompanying on their final journey

Every year on 24th July, we take a moment to recognise the life-saving work of Samaritans – a charity offering free, confidential emotional support to anyone who’s struggling 💭

The date is no coincidence – 24/7 reflects their promise to be there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – whenever someone needs to talk 📞💬

This day is all about:
🧠 Raising awareness of mental health
🗣️ Encouraging open, honest conversations
💚 Reminding everyone that help is always available

🇬🇧 Why do funerals in the UK take longer than in other countries?

It’s something we’re often asked — why does it take over a week (sometimes longer) to arrange a funeral here, when in some places it happens within a day or two?

Here’s why 👇

📝 Legal steps first
In the UK, a death must be formally registered before anything else can happen. If it was unexpected, a coroner may also need to investigate — and that can add several days or more.

☀️ Climate & culture
In warmer countries, funerals happen more quickly — often due to the heat and longstanding cultural traditions. It's not unusual for them to take place within 24–48 hours.

💐 Time to personalise
Here in the UK, families often want time to plan something more personal — choosing flowers, music, readings and making sure loved ones can attend.

📅 Availability
Crematoria and venues can be busy, especially in certain areas — meaning you may need to wait for the next available date and time.

So while it might feel frustrating, the wait is usually due to law, logistics and tradition — not because anyone is dragging their feet.
