So what are normal milestones? And how do you know if your baby or child is on track with their development?
The first thing to be aware of is that normal development varies, a lot, particularly with things like taking their first steps. It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing your baby/child to others, and then worrying they are behind, when actually they are well with normal limits. However, parental instincts that something is not quite right can be an indication that your baby/child needs an assessment by a health care professional. If you are concerned, it is best to talk to your Health Visitor or GP first.
A Paediatric Physiotherapist predominantly focuses on gross motor skills (sitting, rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping etc), although we have a good awareness of the other areas of development too. And whilst every child develops at their own pace, a Physiotherapist can help to teach you how to maximise their opportunities to learn and reach their full potential with their gross motor skills. If your child's development is falling outside of normal limits, we can then give you an indication as to why this may be.
