Tuesday Mediation FAQs - Can our children have a say?

Child inclusive mediation is an important part of the mediation process, and we always talk about this to parents of children who are around or above the age of 10 years.

Research by children of separated parents tells us that children do want to have a voice, to be listened to, and for their parents to take on board their views when they are making decisions about the future family situation.

With the written consent of both parents, children are sent an invitation from the mediator to come and talk about their experience of their family situation, to share their thoughts and feelings, and to share any concerns they have which they may need help conveying to their parents. The mediator will feedback to their parents what the children wish them to.

The aim is that this information helps parents in their mediation discussions and decision making. Any invitation to a child is an invitation only, and there is never any pressure to attend. The mediator will work with the parents to ensure that children are able to attend this meeting with reassurance that this is time for them, and that parents do not try and influence the children in any way.

We have a well established psychos*xual therapy programme for couples but what is less known is that you can also meet with a s*x therapist as an individual.

The focus for individual sessions is set by you - whether that is to explore achieving a more satifying s*xual experience or to discover your own image and understanding of self in relation to s*x and intimacy. Our trained psychos*xual therapists can provide a confidential and safe space to make that journey.

If you think that this is something that might benefit you, contact us to make an initial appointment. As a charity, we want to make our services available to all so if cost is a barrier please ask about our bursary scheme.

It is one of the milestones that appears all over social media at the start of September. Starting school, starting secondary school, back to a new year, and new uniform.

For some parents though, we know that underneath they are holding difficult memories from their own experience in education, and the school visits and preparation have forced those memories up again to be processed.

Some of these difficult feelings may never have been talked about and finding a partner, family member or friend you can trust to share with can help.

You might also find it beneficial to mention your concerns to your childs teacher or the pastoral team so that they can put in place any additional support to ease your concerns.

Or if you prefer, you can take time to explore your own experiences and anxieties privately in a session with one of our counsellors in individual counselling.

Tuesday Mediation FAQ - Is family mediation just for divorcing couples?

In the main, mediators are working with couples who are separated or in the process of separation. They may be married and intending to get divorced or have already divorced, or they may never have married and have been cohabiting.

We do also work with grandparents where there has been a disruption to their contact with their grandchildren, as well as other relatives such as aunties and uncles.

Thinking about heading back to school? Facing the cost of new school uniform?

Our charity shop has a stock of uniform items available to anyone who needs it. This is purely to help out local families and not something we use to raise money.

If you have found your child has outgrown their uniform but it is clean and still in good condition, please consider dropping it into our shop in Trehaven Parade, Woodhatch so that others may benefit.

Tuesday Mediation FAQ - How long does mediation take?

This depends on whether you are in mediation for finance and property issues only, child arrangements only, or both of these.

On average, we estimate that you will need between 3 - 5 joint meetings but they will depend on the complexity of the issues, and the level of communication between you.

Tuesday Mediation FAQ - Will I have to sit in the same room as my ex?

Mediation usually takes place with both parties and the mediator in the same room (whether this is in person or virtually).

However, there are situations where is may be more appropriate to have ‘shuttle mediation’ where you and your ex-partner do not see or talk to each other directly, and the mediator moves between you to convey information.

This can be particularly helpful in situations involving domestic abuse where one party may feel vulnerable but still wishes to mediate. There may be other situations where shuttle mediation may be an option, and your mediator can discuss this with you at your MIAM.
