🚨 Did you know? When we talk about Black History Month, we must include Black Autistic voices! 📢

The truth is, Black autistic people are vastly underrepresented in research and face unique barriers to diagnosis and support. Why?

💔 Implicit racial bias and stereotyping can cause autistic characteristics to be dangerously misinterpreted. This leads to:

❌ Social Exclusion & Isolation
🏫 Increased Disciplinary Action

This constant misunderstanding forces a heavy burden: increased pressure to mask their authentic selves.

We need research that includes ALL experiences and systems that see and support Black Autistic individuals and their families.

Soaring high ✈️☁️ A has a deep passion for aviation and looks forward to the Eastbourne Airshow every year!

This year, our team made it their mission to ensure he could attend and enjoy the airshow on his own terms. From finding the perfect viewing spot to planning for sensory needs, every detail was centred around his comfort, safety, and happiness. It was a privilege to help him reconnect with something he loves.

A special shoutout to the staff for safely driving A’s car. Their support made this memorable day possible! 🤝🏻

T'S SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY 🌟

T arrived at Transforming Support in October 2024. Initially, he showed little cooperation, with frequent shouting, throwing food at the manager, and unauthorised departures to Brighton that required police intervention and multiple missing person reports.

The staff at Prinsted implemented a strategy of gradual engagement. They focused on building trust through shared activities, offering personal care support, and assisting with room cleaning.

T now regularly informs staff when he leaves and returns, and he reliably responds to text messages when out. He has also started to participate in the community. He plays card games and forms friendly relationships with the manager and other residents. 🤝🏻

His journey is a testament to the power of a supportive environment and tailored care in fostering trust and promoting positive change.
