Working on descriptive language and shared knowledge can take many forms. This morning I was doing barrier games using air dry clay and we came up with these.
These activities work on asking questions to seek clarity, giving instructions and also problem solving when things don’t go as expected.

It is so sad that this experience is happening for many parents of children who aren’t ‘talking’.

If I applied this rule to my current caseload I’d have to say goodbye to at least 2/3s of you and I think their parents would agree that even though they aren’t ‘talking’ they are developing very clear communication methods.

AAC most definitely does NOT stop talking if it’s going to develop. What it does do is give that child a clear method of communication so that all whoever they come into contact with can understand what they are asking for. This reduces frustration for that child and their families.

The comment in the post about waiting for ‘go’ I tell my clients to wait for 10 seconds for a look, a sound, a show of anticipation. The waiting for go is to develop cause and effect awareness and that they can control when something starts in whatever means they can. Yes, we model the word ‘go’ for them as they’ve given their version and some clients will go on to say ‘go’ but others develop their own way of telling you to get on with it!

Communication comes in all forms, not just words! Last night Luna was clearly telling me I needed to share my pizza 🤣 with all my clients my aim is for communication in the best means possible for them and that often involves a whole mix of different techniques through speech, sign, symbols, iPads and non verbal communication through touch, gesture and facial expression.

I’ve got lots of lovely clients at brooklands school, can I ask a cheeky favour for people to vote for them in this competition to hopefully win some money for their school.

So my eldest has Autism and ADHD and likes to bake solo. I buy him kits so it’s easier for him. He’s taking things very literally tonight as asked if he really had to ‘mix by hand’ not really processing what he was asking I said yes and looked up to just stop him in time before he put his hands in the bowl. A conversation has now taken place about how it means to use a spoon but yes it’s not clear 😂🤦‍♀️🧁

Anyone else watch the Richard Tice press conference and feel their blood pressure rise? Don't often follow political news (it's all too depressing!) but having seen bits of this appear on my feed I felt the need to watch it and Luna and Bonnie are learning some colourful language as I react to nonsense that he's spouting! SEND provision does need a review but not in the direction that he's talking!

It’s World Prematurity Day today. There is a link between babies born premature and having speech delay so make sure you always tell your therapist if they were premature when you seek advice if you have concerns.
My youngest was born at 33 weeks and was a little slower to begin with but she caught up and now she’s 6 going on 16!
