Another installment of our series which explores the way we use language, the reasons why and the emotions and actions we often attact to it.

This week instead of looking in to the past at memory, we are exploring how we may choose to look at the future, with the words; Hope, Longing and Yearning.

17/08/2021

As promised, here I talk about the words MEMORY and NOSTALGIA.
Two important words defined in the dictionary as follows....

Memory:
1) the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information.
2) something remembered from the past.

Nostalgia:
1) a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.
2) something done or presented in order to evoke feelings of nostalgia.

Memory is, to a very large extent, what creates our sense of identity & we spend a lot of time accessing and assessing memory, without it we simply wouldn't have language.
But memory is a fluid & unreliable function.

Science has proven over & over that our memories are far from accurate & are often enhanced or elaborated upon by things we've experienced or seen at other times.

On top of this, dementia & brain injuries can rob us of memory, so what are we to make of this? Is there anything we can do about it?

Here, I explore our relationship with our memories & the possible dangers of nostalgia as a 'remembered' experience or impression of an event. Nostalgia isn't the memory itself but the emotions or a sense of longing for it, hence its equal unreliability.

Join me to take a ten minute dive in to these two words, think about some interesting concepts on memory and ways that we can live more mindfully day to day in the present moment, in order to feel and experience from the now.

THE POWER OF WORDS AND LANGUAGE: Memory & Nostalgia⠀

Another week of & the importance that words & language have, & here at CWH our passionate belief that conversation is central to the progress of our individual journeys & the continued growth of our connection as a community. It is what makes us human, what defines us from so many other of the worlds creatures. The ability to transmit, hone & evaluate ideas, reach consensus, create connection, explore emotions &, ultimately, ensure we are understood.⠀⠀

Kezra and I love a good chat and this fortnightly feature has been such a blessing in allowing us to explore further, parts of the language we use each day, diving in to conversation and the power that it holds. ⠀

This week I am talking about Memory and Nostalgia, perhaps these words have many meanings or are used in various ways, often painful, often delightful but relevant to all of us as we use both intellectually and emotionally, in work, play and the everyday. ⠀

Memory is, to a very large extent, what creates our sense of identity. Without memory we couldn't have language, relationships or any meaning sense of self, so it's little wonder we spend a lot of time accessing and assessing memories &, from time to time, wallowing in a little nostalgia.⠀

But memory is a fluid & unreliable function. Science has proven over & over that our memories are far from accurate & are often enhanced or elaborated upon by things we've experienced or seen at other times.⠀

On top of this, dementia & brain injuries can rob us of memory, so what are we to make of this? Is there anything we can do about it?⠀

In my upcoming IGTV, I explore our relationship with our memories & the possible dangers of nostalgia & I encourage you to start living more consciously & intentionally and how you might do that while still enjoying the joy that we can embrace from both of these. ⠀

How do you find memory or nostalgia, or both, play a role in your life? Has nostalgia ever created a sense of connection that has been a benefit, or even visa versa?⠀

I'd love to hear your thoughts and for more please visit our other IGTV videos or our You Tube channel - link in bio.

Our next Community Conversation...our expert host is Tim Tucker!⠀

I am really pleased to welcome author Tim Tucker to the (virtual!) sofa this week as we discuss the creative process, putting ourselves under pressure to be productive & measuring our value by our output as well as our shared love of Bob Dylan & literature.⠀

The pandemic has had a dramatic effect on both our lives, but in quite different ways & I'm really looking forward to comparing notes on what we've each learned from the challenges we faced through this period. ⠀

As Tim says, “The pandemic has put a lot of us under pressure. And not just in terms of dealing with isolation, or forced co-dependency. It’s also, for me at least, brought into focus my relationship with productivity and how that impacts my idea of self-worth. As parts of my work have changed dramatically, in terms of context and output, I’ve been forced to confront my own attitude to these things and how they relate to my own deeply entrenched values and beliefs. This may be a good thing, as it means we can start to identify ways we might need to reassess those things and ultimately improve our well being. But it’s far from easy.”⠀

I couldn't agree more & I hope you feel inspired to join us on Thursday evening at 7.30pm LIVE on stories. This is going to be a lively, interactive chat and we welcome you along for a really informative conversation. ⠀

If you would like to ask questions, understand or hear how the past few years have affected us or learn more about the pressures we put ourselves under and the obligations we all feel to 'perform' in life and work, then please do come along. ⠀

LIVE 7.30pm THURSDAY EVENING (GMT)⠀

NEW PODCAST - Using awareness to cultivate happiness⠀
*LINK IN BIO*⠀
Life happens in the small moments when we are truly present. ⠀

So often we search for happiness and joy outside of ourselves and we get stuck in the 'I will be happy when...' mentality. This never leads to happiness because we have placed it at a fictional point in the future which never arrives, because as soon as we reach it the goal post moves and we find ourselves right back where we started; trying to reach it, believing we will feel it when we get there. Usually when we own this item or have achieved that goal. ⠀

Yet peace, joy, contentment and a sense of meaning in our lives is actually available to us in any given moment. We just have to be truly present in each moment with the recognition that the only moment is now, that everything else is simply a perception and not real.⠀
Today we discuss how developing a greater awareness and presence in our lives is the key to true, sustainable happiness.⠀

We talk about the differences between awareness and self-awareness, and a range of practices that we can implement in our lives to help us cultivate greater awareness and remain in this state.⠀

Have a listen to Ian and I chat this through, offer some practical thoughts on how you can be more present & appreciate things immediately in front of you, and how remaining aware a little more everyday will help you to reach more of your joy within. ⠀

The books we recommended in this podcast are 'Broken Open' by Elizabeth Lesser & 'When Things Fall Apart' by Pema Chödrön⠀

"I have come to discover that it is the simple, small and precious moments of our lives, that if we are not fully present for, could appear seemingly insignificant. That they are an opportunity to experience the true joy of what it is to be human and hold the key to our greatest fulfilment"⠀
Kezra⠀

"I realised not that long ago, that the vast majority of my life was spent in an unconscious default, that I spent the majority of my time either in the past or in the future, that I was practically never present. I was attaching my sense of achievement, future happiness & contentment to events that were still to come" ⠀

Believe in your destiny.
Trust in your instinct.
Listen to your heart, your soul, your inner fire.
Take time to reflect, to sit in silence, to allow your body & mind to settle and tell you what it needs.

Be that rest, self care, a new adventure, travel. To grasp an opportunity, take that new job, have that awkward relationship conversation or give yourself permission to dream.

Embrace who you are now.
Love yourself, your journey and the path that you are on and be intentional in setting the direction of that path. And if you are unsure where that path might be, what the destination is, how to take the first steps then I hope we can help. We are here to support, to guide and to allow you to believe in yourself and all that you are!

Visit our IGTV library for some Friday motivation, our to begin understanding how to listen to your soul or check out the links in our bio for a library of resources which might help.

We are here for you, as a community and as a guiding light. Welcome!

"What do you really want? ⠀

Earlier this week on our Power of words series I discussed the idea of who we are, the person we refer to as "i" or "me" and the narrative that we create around that. Perhaps from past experience, from judgement, from an idea of success, maybe comparison or the things and stories we have been told or listened to our whole lives. ⠀

What would happen if for just a moment you set that aside and asked yourself the question again..."who am I and what do I truly want? If i was truly free, what would I do or desire?"⠀

Our new course - FINDING YOU offers you the chance to connect with your deeper self, explore your dreams and have an experience of live that you want. That brings you the most joy, contentment, peace, harmony, thrill, love, insight...whatever it is you are reaching for or whatever cross roads you may be on; this course offers a first step in to clearing the fog and getting back to a path of light & curiosity. ⠀

This isn't about not being good enough now, it is about embracing exactly who you are - all of you. Celebrating & being present with your life & enabling you to do that with courage, so that you can continue to discover more about the things that make you shine, that light you up inside and equally, which may be holding you back from being fully you. ⠀

For most of us it is the fear blocking us from doing what we really want to do & the reason many of us believe we are not worthy of great & beautiful things out of life. Our idea of who we are is, very often, the wall between where we are in life & where we'd like to be. ⠀

WE TRAP OURSELVES. ⠀

I introduce this concept in Tuesdays which is available on our IGTV & sign up now to our community to hear more about this course, get access to loads of wellness and holistic health content & begin to connect with your authentic self, all supported by a wholehearted, loving community. ⠀

POWER OF WORDS AND LANGUAGE: Ego, Self and Identity⠀

This week I specifically wanted to get to the heart of the vital questions, ⠀
"Who are you and what do you want?"⠀

We each have an idea of who we are - this person we refer to as "I" or "me", about whom we have a strong sense of "Self" - this is what "I am like", often as if that is some immutable fixed object in space & time when it most certainly is no such thing.⠀

Our sense of who we are is the result of the stories we tell ourselves, how we interpret, the things that happen to and around us our whole lives. That endless stream of experiences, conversations, lessons, admonitions, accidents, feelings and concepts that cause us to react the way we do to the things that happen to and around us. ⠀

🧐 Spoiler Alert: It is all made up! ⠀

Now, if that's a beautiful story that makes you happy, then that is amazing - stick with it! But for most of us, it isn't the deliverer of joy, laughter & happiness - it is the limiter to our potential, the fear blocking us from doing what we really want to do & the reason many of us believe we are not worthy of great & beautiful things out of life. ⠀

Our idea of who we are is, very often, the wall between where we are in life & where we'd like to be. We trap ourselves with labels - I am a depressive, I am an anxious person, I am lazy, I am not bright - & we base our idea of what's possible in the future on what happened in the past. ⠀

None of this is necessary or inevitable. We can reframe & redesign our senses of self. We can tell ourselves a different story. ⠀

Head over to IGTV and I hope what I have to say here helps you do that to shape an experience of life that serves you better than your current story, makes you happy & delivers contentment.⠀
