The Cardiff Half Marathon is our biggest deployment of the year, with over 150 on hand to support the 30,000 runners. As such it's also our biggest logistical challenge of the year.

From moving and checking kit and equipment to finalising operational plans and personnel deployment, a lot goes on behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready and in the right place.

A huge thank you to our Logistics Team and all those helping ensure that our people will be ready someone needs help along the way. Diolch o galon!

Gemma Atherton is another member who will be taking on the Cardiff Half Marathon this Sunday to raise money for us!

Gemma is another of our dedicated and is Divisional Manager at St John Ambulance Cymru Aberystwyth.

Gemma said: "Training for this half marathon has been a real challenge. I was never a natural runner, but over time it has become part of who I am. For me it is not about pace or distance, it is about moving, staying healthy, and keeping going when it gets tough.

"That focus on health is something I have also found through my volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru. Being part of St John has been rewarding in so many ways. Our small Division has welcomed more than 200 volunteers, many of whom have gone on to follow careers as paramedics, nurses, doctors and other health professionals.

"Some of the people providing care in hospitals and communities today may have taken their very first steps in a St John uniform.

"This half marathon is both a physical and a mental test, and I am running it for the organisation that has given me and so many others the chance to learn, grow and give back. St John Cymru is not just about first aid, it is about building a family of lifesavers.

"If you have ever been helped by a first aider, or if you value the time and effort volunteers put into your community, please consider sponsoring me. Every donation is a huge encouragement and it will help St John Ambulance Cymru continue creating more lifesavers for the future."

Diolch Gemma! Pob lwc!

With the Cardiff Half Marathon just a few days away, we're highlighting the stories of some of the members running to raise money for us.

While our will be providing vital first aid cover for the thousands of runners taking part, we're really grateful for the additional support provided by our fundraising runners! Click the link in the comments if you'd like to donate!

Kathleen Salter (pictured on the right) said: "I'm running this half marathon for my mum, Mireille Northover who passed away in August 2024 after losing an 9 month battle to oesophageal cancer. Prior to my mums passing she was awarded the title of OStJ and made a member of the Order of St John.

"My mum absolutely loved her work with St John starting as a volunteer, moving on to launching and implementing the Falls scheme nationwide and finally working her way up to becoming a Community Response Officer. She truly loved supporting local communities in any way she could and helped to inspire and motivate so many people around her.

"This half marathon is in honour of my mum and the work and people she loved so much with special mention to those at St John who were so supportive of my mum during her battle with cancer and who helped to honour her so beautifully at her funeral.

"The work St John do is so important and I'd love to help raise some money to keep their lifesaving efforts going. If you can donate, no matter how small, my mum and I would be forever grateful."

Diolch Kathleen!
