If you’re flirting with the idea of change after years of staying the same, looking after kids and being available for EVERYONE - chances are it will feel a little uncomfortable.

That tight feeling in the pit of your stomach? That ‘who do I think I am?’ voice? That’s called growth. And growth can truly challenge your status quo.

Unfortunately, confidence doesn’t arrive before growth happens - it comes after, which is why having imposter syndrome shows up
right at the edge of your next level. And that’s how you know.

Here’s my take…

When you feel the familiar discomfort of growth, you KNOW you’re on the right track. Keep going despite the inner voice telling you to stop.

Don’t wait to feel ready - do it anyway. Your nervous system will recalibrate.

I’m noticing a growing trend amongst female clients.

They’re beginning to use AI (Chat GPT/Claude/Grok) as a ‘top-up’ between sessions, using it as a first point of call when things get out of hand. A ‘safe’ place to ask questions and feel reassured.

And I understand why.

AI is calm and encouraging. It never gets irritated or tells you off. And it validates you and gives you instant reassurance exactly when you need it - even in the middle of the night.

For a nervous system that feels scared, overwhelmed, invisible or dismissed, that can feel like instant relief.

But there’s something in this we’re not really talking about.

Our human need to share the burden, be heard and taken seriously. And the reality that there isn’t someone ‘real’ there to hear us.

Add in hormonal shifts, children leaving home, ageing parents, divorce, and financial insecurity… and suddenly there’s overwhelm.

Female friendships tend to shift in midlife and many women realise they don’t actually have consistent spaces where they can open up and say:

‘I’m not okay.’

AI fills that gap, of sorts.

But it doesn’t replace eye contact or co-regulation. That subtle way two nervous systems settle and calms when someone truly sees and ‘gets’ you.

I’m not anti-AI. I’m actually tech-curious as I started out as a marketeer in tech all those years ago and I can appreciate the potential of it. But as a therapist, I also see the human hunger for connection underneath it.

When we hit the chapter of change that we call midlife, we yearn for a deeper and more honest connection, now more than ever.

And that’s something no algorithm can fully replace.

I’m curious, do you use AI to process your thoughts or health concerns?
Does it soothe you or sometimes increase your anxiety?

I’d love to hear your honest take on what is becoming a little dirty secret👇

In a culture that glorifies constant interaction, opting out can seem like a choice less ordinary.

But if your nervous system feels dysregulated, you don’t want more socialising or planning - you want stillness and peace.

Know that when you crave space and calm, you’re not boring or antisocial.

You’re overstimulated.

So let your mind wander, and your thoughts drift off into the distance. Regulation looks different for everyone.

When you disappear into your own inner word for a while, your body gets the message that you’re safe and don’t have to perform - it can just be.

In a world that profits from your attention, choosing solitude is radical act of self-care 🤎.
