How the feet have a direct effect on the rest of your body
Have you ever considered your feet? Not much I hear you say, why would that be? Probably because most of your attention is in your upper body. We spend a lot of time in our heads, looking outwards, engaging in front of ourselves - whether on our phones, on the computer, driving cars, sitting on chairs & sofas.
In my youth I practiced ballet & dance regularly, later on in my late teens yoga took the forefront of my world. These disciplines broadened my movement vocabulary enabling me to build a better relationship with my feet.
Over the years I have chosen comfortable footwear, stayed away from heels, spent time barefoot and had a good relationship with the ground - mindful walking drew my attention to the different terrains from sand, to mud, rock, grass and tree roots.
Our feet are constantly taking in stimulus and this in turn feeds up into your physicality, giving rise to how you hold yourself, your posture, the parts of your body which lock out, whether or not your tilting more forwards or back and your natural tone.
Next time you’re out and about walking try becoming more mindful with your steps, perhaps try footwear that make your feet more active, engaged and stimulated, take it slowly to start with.
