ESSENTIAL OILS SPOTLIGHT
Once a month I feature an essential oil on my page and share the properties that the oil is known for, as well as its common uses.
This month we'll be looking at... Frankincense!
Steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia tree, Frankincense is a base oil, meaning the aroma lasts for a long time - which is why it is often used in scented candles. The woody, sweetly spiced scents are rich, warming, and comforting.
Frankincense is full of anti-inflammatory properties and is used in aromatherapy to soothe the body both emotionally and physically - soothing stress and anxiety, soothing a sore throat by reducing mucus, soothing period pain.
Like Geranium, it is also a very balancing oil - balancing emotions, and balancing for female hormones.
Frankincense was anecdotally one of the three gifts presented by the three kings in the Bible, because of it's association with deities and spirituality. On a similar vein, this oil is commonly used in meditation, not only for it's spiritual links, but it also helps to slow a racing mind and achieve a sense of focus.
I use Frankincense in a blend when a client is experiencing anxiety and overwhelm, as it's sedating properties help to calm the nervous system. It is also my go-to for facial massage, as it can be rejuvenating on the skin, particularly mature skin.
