Today is International Nurses Day, and we are proud to celebrate the nurses whose skill, compassion and professionalism shape life in our homes every day.

These photographs bring together former nurses now living in our homes, the dedicated clinical teams who care for them today, and student nurses from Bournemouth University - a powerful reflection of the experience, expertise and aspiration that continue to define the profession.

Above all, today is about saying thank you.

To every nurse in our homes and across the profession: your expertise brings reassurance, your judgement inspires confidence, and your kindness brings comfort in moments that matter most.

Ahead of International Nurses Day, we’ve been speaking to relatives across our homes about the difference nursing care has made to the lives of those closest to them.

Throughout these conversations, we’ve heard reflections on the reassurance, compassion and confidence that come from knowing a loved one is in expert hands.

Here, one relative shares their thoughts on the importance of nursing care, and the lasting difference it can make to families as well as residents.

A wonderful celebration took place recently at Braemar Lodge Care Home in Salisbury as residents and staff came together to mark a very special milestone for WWII veteran Lieutenant Colonel Anthony - 100 years, or as the cricketing world might say, “100 not out” 🎂

Anthony was celebrated in style, joined by loved ones and representatives from the local military community.

A lifelong cricket enthusiast and much-loved member of Braemar Lodge since 2022, Anthony’s centenary was marked by a true team effort worthy of the occasion.

His daughter Rosemary summed up the day simply: “It was fantastic. Dad was on sparkling form.”

A century well played, and beautifully celebrated at Braemar Lodge.

A return to the dance floor for Avon Cliff Care Home resident, Ted 🎶

95 year old Ted revisited his love of tap dancing after years away, attending a local “Happy Tappy’s” class with support from the companionship team.

After watching the group begin, Ted put on a pair of tap shoes and joined in, taking his place in a classic chorus line led by dance teacher Yvonne.

Ted, who first discovered dance as a young man and met his late wife on the dance floor, said the experience was “amazing” and that he “felt like a star” ✨

Companionship Team Leader Laura had 34cm of her hair cut to support charity - the fifth time she has donated her hair for good causes 💇‍♀️✨

Residents Valerie and Barbara joined staff and professional hairdresser Olena in helping with the cut, turning the occasion into a shared and uplifting experience.

Laura’s hair will be donated to the The Little Princess Trust, with additional funds raised going towards St John's Wi******er 🎗️

A beautiful reunion at Abbotts Barton 🎻✨

Former violin teacher Auriol was delighted to reconnect with Lucy, one of her former pupils from more than 45 years ago, during a special recital arranged by the Wi******er Chamber Music Trust.

The afternoon featured performances by Lucy's sister, cellist Kate, and Kate's son, violinist Oren, alongside moments of shared reflection as Auriol caught up with Kate, Lucy, and their family after the concert 🎶

There’s something very special about new life in springtime 🌼

At Linden House, five tiny ducklings have hatched, bringing gentle joy and moments of connection to our residents. From the first signs of movement in the incubator to their wobbly first swim, our residents and team have been there every step of the way.

For many, the experience stirred treasured memories. Stories of farm life, family gardens and caring for animals have been shared, weaving past and present together in the most natural way.

Across our homes, the lead up to Easter has been full of fun and creativity. From Easter bonnet parades to crafting sessions, and flower arranging in the sunshine, residents have been enjoying opportunities to celebrate the season 🐣💐

This achievement is especially meaningful as it is shaped entirely by independent reviews from residents, families, and friends. Their feedback reflects lived experience across our homes and the confidence placed in the care and daily life our teams provide.

It’s also a moment to celebrate the teams across our homes, whose consistency, kindness, and professionalism make a real difference day to day. Three of our homes have also been recognised in their individual categories – Bourne View, Wellington Grange, and Newstone House – a reflection of the high standards upheld locally and across the wider group.

At Colten Care, we’re proud to see this kind of feedback, and even prouder of the people behind it: teams who bring together expertise and genuine warmth to support residents to live comfortably, confidently, and with dignity.

Well done to residents and team members at Braemar Lodge Care Home in Salisbury, who recently joined the UK’s Great British Spring Clean, contributing to Keep Britain Tidy’s nationwide campaign with a thoughtful morning spent in and around Victoria Park.

Together, they collected four bags of litter, making a tangible difference to the local environment and showing what can be achieved through shared effort ♻️🌟

St Patrick’s Day brought music, laughter and a touch of green to across all our homes 🍀

Residents enjoyed Irish dancing, live music, quizzes and plenty of festive fun, with many sharing memories sparked by the celebrations. At Fernhill, one resident said, “The music reminded me of old times.”

From community gatherings to fundraising bakes, it was a joyful day filled with connection, culture and celebration.
