This week is MRI Safety Week so we thought we would share some interesting info with everyone about our MRI scanner as we see many patients daily for this type of scan.

How does an MR Scanner work?
The MRI scanner uses a very strong magnet, radiofrequency waves and some smaller magnets to get signals from the atoms inside your body. The atoms in your body behave in different ways depending on where they are and the scanner can see these differences.

MRI System
The Magnet in an MRI Scanner is not switched off. Itโ€™s always โ€œON" and creating a strong magnetic field.
The MRI System is operated by MRI trained staff All equipment and accessories need to be
approved for use in the MRI Scanner, therefore no other equipment should be taken into the MRI scanner even in an emergency
Only Authorised staff can enter the MRI room

MRI Controlled Area
The Controlled Access area is to control and restrict access to the MRI Environment (MRI Scanner Room). Typically, it will contain the MRI Control Room, patient preparation area and changing rooms.

MR Environment
The MR Environment is confined to the MRI Examination Room (the room in which the MRI scanner is located. The MR Environment is defined internationally as anywhere around the MRI Scanner where the magnetic fields are strong enough to raise concerns about metal objects and people with implants.

Only authorised staff (trained MR staff and the RMO) can enter the MR Environment, under no circumstances must anyone non authorised even in an emergency enter the MR Environment.

Does MRI use ionising radiation like X-Rays?
No. MRI does not use any ionising radiation. It uses a very strong magnet.

Main Hazards in MRI
Strong Magnetic Field
Medical implants
Acoustic noise
Nerve stimulation
MRI contrast
Medication patches and skin patches

Monday 5th May was World Hand Hygiene Day and our fabulous IPC lead, Janet, organised a display in our reception area to get us all thinking about hand hygiene.

There was a Gloves or Not quiz for staff to complete and lots of lovely freebies which always go down well with our teams.

We continue to support each other in maintaining high standards of infection prevention here at Highfield Hospital.
