What does the phrase ‘Do you have 8 minutes’ mean:

"Do you have 8 minutes?": is a private code used between trusted friends.
It is a subtle way to communicate, "I need you" or "I need support".
The phrase signals that the person needs a short period of focused, undivided attention from a friend.
The power of the 8-minute rule:

It's achievable:
Eight minutes is a manageable amount of time for anyone to spare, even when busy.

It creates a safe space:
This code allows someone to be vulnerable and ask for help without overstaying their welcome.

It deepens friendships:
By using this phrase, friends show trust and create a meaningful connection, making the other person feel valued.

It can be a lifeline:
Just eight minutes of support can make a significant difference to someone who is struggling, helping them feel heard and less alone.

If you or a loved one are navigating menopause, you’re not alone.

Menopause occurs naturally when periods stop due to lower hormone levels. It most commonly affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, though it can happen earlier.

Join our next free webinar to learn how exercise can support the menopause journey. An expert physiotherapist will share practical advice to help manage common symptoms such as hot flushes, fatigue, and brain fog, while also reducing incontinence, easing discomfort, and helping to prevent prolapse.

Can’t attend live? No problem. Register anyway and you’ll be able to watch the event on-demand, at a time that suits you.

Always a pleasure to work with the fabulous team at Springhill Hospice. We hope the event goes well on Saturday!

We're counting down the hours until the Three Reservoir Ramble with Springhill Hospice but there's a few things to remember before the biggest event of the year sets off this Saturday;

Yes, you can still sign up on the day, make sure you give yourself plenty of time before we set off though & maybe wear something green in case we’ve already ran out of shirts. And to be on the safe side something waterproof wouldn't hurt, though we've got plenty of ponchos & warm thoughts to get us through. Get here for 9:30 to be on the safe side.

Yes, we've got warm brews & breakfast before we set off. Yes we have food on when we get back. If you're joining us then please think ahead if you really need to bring the car, if you're staying for a drink maybe get a lift up, have a walk or get one of Andy Burnham's magic buses up Shawclough Road so we can keep the parking for people who need it, we've borrowed some extra car parks so if you get here & ours is full the guys in green can tell you where to find somewhere to park...hopefully.

There’s a few thank you’s we need to dish out as well along the way, to Shawclough Community Primary, Christ Church Healey & Thrum Hall for helping us find somewhere to park the cars for a shed loads of ramblers. To Molesworths for sponsoring all 700 t-shirts to make the sea of green we’re taking for a walk, the magnificent people of The Highfield Hospital for donating the manpower to pack hundreds of goody bags full of sweet treats that they’ve financed themselves, Admiral Labels & Print have donated hundreds of labels for hundreds of goody bags, Martin Brower Community & Asda Rochdale for their donations of food & drinks before we set off & the glorious Liv at Brakes for helping us put on one enormous breakfast for more than half a thousand people. And the good folks at Yearsley's for donating some very optimistic ice creams for half way round & Ribble Farm Fare for donating more bananas than a gorilla's retirement party.

We’ve got live music all though the afternoon with long standing Oxford Legend James Konnanov, the sensational Ed Jamil and the outrageously talented Cadenza Quintet bringing a little class to the day, all kindly donating their time to help put on one hell of a show for an incredible cause. Not to mention we're rounding it all off with Ria McNeeney’s Car Park Disco for one last afternoon hour of joy to finish off one hell of a day. If you’re a musician & feel like you want to give up an hour to help keep the good vibes flowing for hundreds of ramblers we’ve got one spot left to fill so we’d love to here from you.

Now we’re going to have a powerful hunger after such a big walk so we’ve built our own little food village to bring together some of the best Rochdale businesses to help us make Saturday a dat to remember, Mike & the gang from Vicolo del Vino will be here dishing out wood fired pizzas with the best of them, the team from the iconic La Mancha are bringing some sunshine & sangria to Shawclough & legendary Chef Noo is back after selling more Pad Thai at our food festival than anyone’s ever seen. And you know it’s a serious situation when even Jelly's Sweets & Treats. are coming out of retirement for one day only to keep anyone with a sweet tooth happy. And the wonderful people from Defiance Spirits will be here selling limited edition G&T’s with the gin they’ve made especially with Springhill Hospice, now the whole point of the afterparty is to celebrate a fantastic cause together, can’t make the walk? No problem, we’re starting the festivities from 1pm so if you want to come for a pizza & a pint, throw a tenner in a collection bucket & soak in the day you are more than welcome to.

There’s an awful lot more going on, want to do some car park Zumba with Caroline before we set off or get a glitter beard? Got you covered. Not to mention the pub being open as usual, the dozens of staff & volunteers that help make this incredible day possible, Big Phil, the mayor, the neighbours for putting up with us, the hundreds of you who do the walk & anyone else who joins us afterwards this all combines to make one astonishing day.

Come rain or shine we're doing something incredible together this weekend Rochdale & we could not be prouder to be doing it with our friends from Springhill & the glorious community around us.

See you on Saturday Rochdale.

Menopause can feel like a big change, but you or your loved one don’t have to go through it alone.

It’s a natural stage of life that usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55, though it can begin earlier. The changes it brings, from hot flushes and fatigue to brain fog or discomfort, can sometimes feel overwhelming.

That’s why we’re hosting a free webinar on the 30th September, to share how exercise can make a difference during the menopause journey. Our expert physiotherapist will offer practical ways to ease symptoms, improve comfort, and support long-term wellbeing.

If you can’t join us live, don’t worry. You can still register and watch on-demand, whenever it suits you. https://bit.ly/4mmf1cJ

🩺🌍 World Sepsis Day 2025 at Highfield Hospital 🌍🩺

This week, our team at Highfield Hospital proudly joined the global movement to raise awareness for World Sepsis Day, observed annually on September 13.
This year’s theme — “5 Facts × 5 Actions” — reminds us that knowledge saves lives. Sepsis is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths globally, yet it often goes unrecognized until it’s too late. That’s why we’ve been busy spreading the word and taking action!
💡 Here’s how we’ve raised awareness this week:

Hosted educational sessions for staff and visitors on the signs and symptoms of sepsis.
Shared updated infographics and fact sheets throughout the hospital.
Participated in the global photo challenge.
Decorated our reception area to help spread the word.
Encouraged our community to learn the 5 key facts and take the 5 life-saving actions. Everyone who took part were treated to some wonderful cakes made by our very own Karen Lannon from our Pre-op team who kindly baked for the event.

Together, we can and . Thank you to everyone who got involved — your voice matters!

🎉 Today is World Physiotherapy Day! 🎉

At Highfield Hospital, we're proud to join the global celebration of the incredible work physiotherapists do every day to improve lives. This year’s theme is “Sit to Stand” – a simple yet powerful movement that plays a vital role in maintaining mobility, independence, and overall health.

💪 Our physiotherapy team has been busy raising awareness around this important theme, sharing tips and demonstrations with patients and staff on how to safely and effectively incorporate sit-to-stand exercises into daily routines.

Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a long-term condition, or simply looking to stay active, sit-to-stand movements can make a big difference.
