Why does hearing change as we get older?

As we age, a few natural changes happen inside the ear.

The ear canal can become drier and narrower, which makes wax harder to clear naturally. The eardrum itself can also lose some of its flexibility over time, a bit like how eyes can develop cataracts and become less clear.

None of this is unusual, and it doesn’t mean anything is “wrong”. But it does mean wax can build up more easily and affect hearing.

If you or a loved one have noticed changes in hearing, a simple ear check can really help.

This week I had the privilege of visiting a patient at The Wisdom Hospice for their ear care.

Providing support in places like this is something I never take for granted. The staff are incredible, the environment is calm and compassionate, and it’s always an honour to offer gentle, comforting care to someone who needs it.

Little things, like clearer hearing, can make such a difference to comfort and connection, especially in settings like these.
