πΌ Hayfever Season & Your Ears π
In the UK, hayfever season often begins in March and April as early tree pollens start to appear. While most people associate hayfever with sneezing and itchy eyes, it can also affect your ears.
Common ear-related symptoms include:
β’ Earache β Pollen can inflame the lining of the Eustachian tubes, causing pressure and discomfort.
β’ Itchy ears β Your immune system releases histamine when reacting to pollen.
β’ Blocked or muffled hearing β Swelling can stop the ears draining fluid properly.
β’ Ear infections (especially in children) β Allergy congestion can trap fluid in the middle ear, creating a breeding ground for bacteria or viruses.
π§πΎπ¦πΌ Children are more at risk because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and can block more easily.
π‘ If you suffer with seasonal allergies, try βYour Pollen Palβ by Kleenex, a free online tool that tracks daily pollen counts and forecasts, helping you prepare for high pollen days with helpful tips. ππΌ https://www.kleenex.co.uk/pollen-count
πIf you have been prescribed or recommended antihistamines or decongestant nasal sprays by your GP, ENT consultant or pharmacist, make sure you start using them as advised to help reduce allergy symptoms and inflammation.
π Not sure if itβs allergies, ear wax, or both?
If your ears feel blocked, itchy or uncomfortable, book an appointment with us and we can check your ears and advise the best course of action.
