1.) Conversations are harder to follow. With common hearing losses, the ears might not be transmitting the sound efficiently and completely to the brain for processing.
2.) Listening takes more effort: More areas of the brain is needed to process the information relayed from the ears. Using more areas of the brain takes up more cognitive processing.
3.) Mental load increases for hearing:
As more executive function is needed to make sense of conversations. It's difficult to use all mental resources constantly at the same capacity all day. So by evening time something gives and we find that we are just mentally exhausted without realising entirely why. Classic example of this is the TV volume needing to get louder in the evenings than earlier on in the day.
