I learnt something yesterday at first aid training that I feel I need to share - I found out that you can text 999 in an emergency.
If you're ever in a situation where you can’t safely call, for example:
- you're in danger and speaking would draw attention
- you're hiding
- you're deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired
Then there's a text service available.
BUT you do need to register your phone in advance by texting “register” to 999. They'll reply with instructions, and once it’s set up, it's there if you ever need it.
If you ever have to use it, keep your message clear and direct. Include things like: the service you need, what's happening and where you are (include road names, towns or landmarks).
For example:
"Ambulance. Man having a heart attack. Outside Pizza Express, High Street, Rayleigh"
The emergency service will then reply, either asking for more information or confirming that help is on the way.
I hope none of us ever need it. But knowing it's there could make a real difference.
