I wanted to share something profound that my young client shared with me today. Having Autism is like being an actor who is forever working, having to act at school, at college, with family, with friends, playing the part of fitting into the neurotypical world, mimicking neurotypical people’s expressions and behaviours, in fear of being bullied, misunderstood, never being able to be their true authentic self except when alone in their room late at night. This is the only place they can take their mask off and truly be free. The only difference is Autistic people do not get paid for this exhausting life long job !
