Muscle mechanics: Gluteus Maximus

The glute max muscle is the largest and heaviest muscle in the body. Its main function is to generate hip extension and lateral rotation of the thigh bone at the hip joint, as well as some abduction.

The glute max muscle has an important role to play in ensuring we can maintain upright postures and maintain a good level of pelvic stability.

Weakness or inhibition of the glute max muscle tends to lead to issues elsewhere and can lead to lower back injuries, hip, knee, hamstring and even calf strains.

Within sport, the glute max muscle plays a pivotal role in propulsion and so it is vital that regular sports participants work hard to maintain a good level of strength within this muscle group.

Struggling with a glute injury? Want to get stronger in this muscle group? You're not alone! get in touch today and let us help!

Nothing makes the day better than receiving reviews like this from clients!

Preventative work has great value in avoiding progression of existing issues and eventual injury. It takes a lot more time to rehabilitate an injury than it does to stay strong, stretch and have some regular soft tissue work to keep you functioning and performing well in any walk of life.

Use of the RAMP protocol for an effective warm:

An effective warm up is a crucial part of any exercise routine. Despite most people knowing this, few make time for it in their routines.

So, why?

The main suggestion is that other than people knowing that a warm up "gets you warm and ready for exercise", few are aware of the many other key benefits.

R - Raising of heart rate and body temperature to supply working muscles with their increased oxygen demand.

A - Activate key muscles to contract more efficiently and produce increasing levels of force.

M - Mobilise key muscles and joints in preparation to tolerate greater loads and reduce injury risk.

P - Potentiate the nervous system and reach the same level of intensity as subsequent exercise.

Warm ups can both reduce injury risk and increase performance levels so try incorporating the RAMP protocol and see the benefits for yourself!

Muscle mechanics: Gastrocnemius

The gastrocnemius muscle originates above the joint line of the posterior aspect of the knee and attaches into the heel bone via the Achilles tendon.

It's main role is to create plantar flexion at the foot (pointing your toes downwards) and flexion at the knee.

The gastrocnemius muscle can generate up to 2-3 times your bodyweight in force upon every foot strike (dependent on speed).

So why is this important?
If you haven't got the necessary strength in this muscle group to generate the force required, the body will stress other parts of the leg musculature in an attempt to fill this force debt.

This in turn increases the risk of injury to not only the gastroc muscles, but to surrounding muscle groups as well. It also means you are highly likely to be performing sub-optimally and compromising your energy efficiency.

If you are suffering with tight calf muscles (you know who you are!) or have had repetitive injuries in this muscle group then get in touch!

Don’t make the same mistake 99% of people will be making come the 1st of January…

I get it, the new year is an ideal time to start (or restart) your fitness journey

But take time to build a solid foundation first

There’s a reason January’s in the gym are bedlam and come February… not so much!

People often launch into their New Year’s resolution far too quickly or with too high an intensity causing burn out and/or injury

Focus on building solid movement patterns as a foundation and give yourself TIME

Strength and power will come but you can’t build a house without putting solid foundations down first!
