Types of Diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes: This is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body makes little or no insulin. It is often diagnosed in children and young adults, and people with this condition must take insulin every day to survive. It cannot be prevented.

Type 2 Diabetes: This is the most common type of diabetes. It occurs when your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or your cells become resistant to the insulin that is produced (insulin resistance). It is often linked to lifestyle factors like diet, physical inactivity, and being overweight, and it can sometimes be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes.

An Eye Screening appointment is different from a Regular Eye Exam: A diabetic eye screening is a specific test for diabetic retinopathy. While a regular eye exam with an optician is essential for checking your overall eye health and vision (including for conditions like glaucoma and cataracts), it does not replace the specialized screening for diabetic eye disease. You should attend both your regular eye exams and your diabetic eye screening appointments.

Type 2 Diabetes: This is the most common form of diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin, or the cells become resistant to the insulin that is produced (known as insulin resistance). This means glucose can't enter the cells effectively, and it builds up in the bloodstream. Type 2 diabetes develops over many years and is often diagnosed in adults, though it is increasingly seen in children.

Why diabetic screening is done

If you have diabetes you may be at risk of developing an eye condition called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can cause sight loss if it's not treated.
Diabetic eye screening checks for signs of diabetic retinopathy, often before you notice any changes in your sight.
Finding and treating it early can prevent or reduce damage to your eyes and sight loss.

Diabetes is the second largest cause of preventable Blindness, please attend your screening appointments.
Diabetic Eye Screening is not the same as an eye test, you should still attend your Opticians for regular eye examinations.
