Meet the Therapist
Susanna Smith

I’ve worked with children with SEN since leaving school, spending 13 years volunteering at specialist play schemes every summer and Easter.

During this time, I trained as a nursery nurse before going on to study speech and language therapy at City University.

I then spent 15 years working within the NHS, supporting preschool children with a range of speech, language and communication needs, before opening my private practice, Chattercubs, Speech and Language Therapy, Harold Wood, in late 2021.

I couldn’t imagine doing any other job 💛

🌟 Why a quiet clinic room matters for little voices 🌟

In our clinic, we create a calm, play-based space where your child’s unique sensory needs and preferences are supported.

This helps reduce the overwhelm that can sometimes come with busy, noisy environments.

When the brain is working hard to filter out lots of sights, sounds, and movement, it has less capacity to focus on building language and communication.

That’s why starting in a quiet, specialist space gives children the best chance to:
✅ Tune in to play and interaction
✅ Build confidence in sharing their voice
✅ Develop new communication skills at their own pace

I had the absolute pleasure of working with this wonderful family and little D. 💕

Being part of Team D and witnessing her incredible journey has been truly amazing! 🌟

She has made so much progress, and I couldn’t be prouder of her. 👏

I will deeply miss our sessions—her brilliant one-liners (gestalts) 🎤, creative play ideas, infectious joy, and laughter.

Throughout our time together, she taught me so much. 📚

Watching her progress through each stage of Gestalt Language Processing to now independently constructing sentences and advocating for herself has been an absolute privilege. ✨

Moments like this are why I love my job so much! 🫶 Supporting each child by valuing their favourite sensory experiences makes every session magical. 🌟

For this little one, I was pretending to sneeze while gently misting him with water! 💦😆 The laughter and joy were contagious, and through this playful interaction, we worked on verbal initiation, reciprocity, and shared joy. 🎉🗣️🤝

In my private clinic, therapy looks very different from my NHS days. There are no tables, no structured "beginning and end" bags or attention buckets. 🙅‍♀️💼 Instead, sessions are led by children's wants, dreams, and pure joy. ✨💭💕

This is where connection and growth truly happen. 🌈💫

Sensory Communication

Sessions at Chattercubs cater to sensory needs, recognising the importance of sensory preferences for children with social communication difficulties. We work with these needs, turning them into fun games to aid communication.

Whether your child enjoys spinning, climbing, bouncing, throwing, or watching things float through the air, we offer a range of activities to suit their sensory preferences.

Homework following the sessions might include finding items to spin at home, playing duvet games, or even engaging in wrestling - each activity discussed and designed to assist and strengthen communication.

Whatever makes your child's eyes glow, it’s a go!
