Training handstands is more fun for me than lifting weights in a gym. Considering someone's personal preference and enjoyment is really important when planning exercise or movement for them. What do you like to do? A good clinician will find creative ways to bring that into your rehab or fitness πŸ€“

If you have 5 minutes, then have a listen to a conversation I had just before Christmas with one of my clients, Jenni, who's made such fantastic progress through our time working together. Chronic pain doesn't run Jenni's life anymore!

One of my favourite things about working with people who have persistent pain is when they start to build confidence. Here's a snippet of our chat:

'Since working with Sam, I've gone on and done things I never thought I could do! I have done five or six mile walks while on holiday for the first time in five years; I've been on a static bike for the first time in five years and I have been more confident in doing things like jumping from height, which is an unrelated side effect of managing my pain better. The fear I felt from any kind of impact on my foot plus my fear of heights used to completely stop me from doing any activity like that. I’ve achieved things I never thought would be possible. I now tackle these challenges with the kind of confidence that I wish that I had all my life!'

Congratulations Jenni, you are smashing your goals and I'm excited to see what you achieve next!

2022 goal: flick from standing on the floor (with straight legs!)

Current level: unassisted flick on a slope (bent legs)

End of 2022 target: roundoff into flick

Moonshot goal: roundoff, flick, back tuck

Excited to focus on some gymnastic goals this year πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ

What are your goals?

January is here again and it's a great time to start fresh and set some goals. However all too often I hear that people give up on their fitness/diet plans in February and March because they didn't get results or weren't sustainable. Sometimes the goals are too vague. Wanting to 'lose weight' is a good start, but how much, over how long, is it realistic?

This is why it's so important to set SMART goals. What exactly do you want to do? When do you want to achieve it by? How can you measure your success?

My goal is to get a 30 second handstand by the end of the year. A good way to see if I'm on track is a 10 second by June.

Think about your goals and write them down. Get a plan in place with check in points to help you see if you're on track. And of course, get some help and support to keep you motivated and accountable πŸ’ͺ🎯

Ease in and slowly build up.

That's what I'm telling myself at the moment! After a few weeks off over Christmas and getting COVID, I went for a run and it felt AWFUL!

I was really frustrated because before Christmas I'd been doing well with pacing and feeling quite aerobically fit.

But, looking on the bright side...
- I went out and ran the whole way without stopping
- It was horrendous weather (driving rain and wind) and I still went
- I got my step count up and my heart rate up
- I was still able to do 5k in under 30 minutes which is my benchmark of the slowest average time for my fitness level

So it's not all bad! And that was only run 1 of the year 😊

I'll try again this week and let the miles slowly add up πŸ’ͺ the same goes for my other fitness and work goals. Easy does it, consistency is what matters!

Happy New Year to all my clients, friends and followers!

Been a while since I posted last as I've been busy Christmassing and taking time off and then getting COVID πŸ˜…πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Isolating in my bedroom has made me appreciate a lot of little things we take for granted

A few thoughts on my last few days::
I can't wait to go for a walk 🚢
There are only so many episodes of Friends I can watch before my brain gets fried πŸ“Ί
Time goes slowly when you want it to go fast! ⌚
A little bit of movement makes things a lot better 🀸

Here's to 2022 and new year positivity (except on COVID tests 🀞)

Once I could do it, I wondered why I ever found it hard in the first place! Learning is hard, but once you know how, it's easy to maintain.

Excited for round 2 of the B2R internship so I can learn and move more with new people

Prepare your body for different movements, and you'll be prepared for the nonlinear nature of life!

Individuals often tell me they injure themselves doing awkward movements, especially under load. So what better way to move than to practice these awkward movements and prepare my muscles, joints, discs, nervous system (etc)!

Movement is simply moving. It doesn't need to be complex. In recent weeks I've been finding my normal exercise routine of weight lifting and running just not motivating and enjoyable as it used to be. Luckily I've just spend 12 weeks on the B2R internship learning novel ways of moving which are both relaxing and challenging. Sometimes it's hard to motivate yourself to move. But my motivation today was to explore how my body felt and what it could do - like a research experiment. For my own health, moving is good nourishment, in terms of physical and mental health. This kind of movement is a welcome change for me.

Thanks Samantha Emanuel and Luke R. Davies for putting the internship together. I'm excited for January already to learn and move with a new group of people!

Move little and often. It will sow seeds for future you

Sometimes it feels like you're making no progress, but suddenly you seem to have made loads...

I've been working on this skill at gymnastics for over 3 months and although we're not 100% there yet, I can now do it on my own without a coach standing next to me. This is a massive step for me to overcome the fear of jumping backwards onto my hands! Watch this space for this skill on the floor without the mat...coming in 2022 ☺️

Keep working at things when they're hard, you'll be building your capacity and making progress without realising. Track what you do so you can see the progress objectively too!

Do you need to fix your posture? πŸ€”

Check out this blog I wrote about posture. It's based on all the latest research evidence around posture!

Here's a few highlights...

Here's the link to the full blog:
https://backtoroots.community/blog/2021/12/1/do-i-need-to-fix-my-posture

We are all individuals and posture is variable amongst us all. So let's focus on what we CAN control and change rather than our posture

Review time! 🌟πŸ’ͺThanks to this awesome client for the kind words πŸ™

'In October 2020, when training at circus school, I suffered a minor shoulder injury which escalated quickly. Convinced I had done major damage, I had scans (showing no tissue damage) and a course of physiotherapy which helped a bit but after a few months I was still experiencing a lot of discomfort. After numerous failed therapies and diagnoses, I was left feeling frustrated and too scared to move my shoulder or do any exercise at all

I first met Sam in February 2021 and after a thorough examination, she explained to me that although there was no tissue damage, what I was experiencing was sensitisation and a fear/avoidance cycle. I found it difficult to believe that I could be in so much pain when there was no tissue damage and have to admit that I was sceptical of the approach that treating brain is the first step to treating the pain

During our program, Sam taught me about the causes of my pain and equipped me with a pain relief 'tool-box' to use when experiencing it. We started to work towards movements that I thought I would not be able to do again and built up my confidence and strength. In a matter of weeks, I noticed dramatic reductions in pain flare-ups and confident in the knowledge that it was safe to exercise, started challenging my shoulder to perform movements that I had avoided for so long

6 months later and I am handstanding, climbing, boxing and working towards pull ups and press ups. When I experience a flare up, I know how to manage it and can always consult Sam if I am worried. In my experience, Sam has done so much for me than just treat my shoulder. She has guided me through a particularly turbulent time, fully supported me, always been there to listen and helped me to totally reframe my approach to training. Without her help, I have no doubt that I would still be living in a pain cycle and not living my life to the full. I would urge anyone experiencing chronic pain to reach out to Sam and experience her way of working

In six months, I have transitioned from anxious, scared and sensitive, to resilient, strong and determined. Thank you Sam!'
