Achy or 'Tin Man' like joints?

One of the biggest complaints of people in their 40s and up in my clinic is about their joints.

And, yes, when you have joint discomfort, it certainly can make it much harder to do the things you love, such as gardening or jobbing. It can make you feel like an “old grandpa” or “old grandma,” even if you’re just in your 40s, 50s, or 60s.

I’m sure you know how they feel, and one easy way to sum it up is like having “TIN MAN JOINTS.”

Because it really is just like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz whose creaky joints made life much harder for him.

And it really can feel like a personal prison for you because:

>> Perhaps NOTHING else out there can make you feel “old” as much as joint discomfort can.
>> Exercising and doing other enjoyable and good-for-you things as often as you did when you were young is more difficult.
>> It can disturb sleep, which makes you feel terrible. (If you’ve ever tried to sleep with uncomfortable shoulders you know what I’m talking about!)
>> It often even hurts relationships because you can’t do many things you once did together, including “getting intimate” the same way you used to.

And what makes it EVEN HARDER is the fear it’s all just going to keep getting WORSE. Unfortunately, that’s true… IF you do nothing to address it.

However, the REALLY GOOD NEWS is there’s finally an easy way to address it that most people never realize!

You see, it’s actually 3 factors that lead to activity-related joint discomfort…

#1. The science surrounding Glucosamine and chondroitin, the most common nutrients in joint supplements, is mixed.

In fact, one well-controlled study showed that supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin was NO BETTER THAN PLACEBO at reducing joint discomfort.

And what’s more, one meta-analysis -- which is basically a statistical review of multiple studies on a given topic -- concluded that glucosamine, chondroitin and the two in combination did not provide joint comfort relief when compared to placebo

Why would you want to settle for such a hit or miss approach when you don’t need to?

#2. A common practice among some joint supplements is “fairy dusting.” This is when the right ingredient is added to a supplement, but in such an insignificant amount that it won’t help you.

Companies likely do this simply to trick you into buying the product. Remember, the right quantities of the right ingredients matter in a big way!

As we age, enzymes known as MMPs (matrix metalloproteinases) and 5-LOX (5-Lipoxygenase) can run rampant.

While these enzymes have important purpose in the body, if they do run rampant – often due to modern lifestyle factors like those noted above -- this can lead to even more collagen and cartilage reduction!

Tried all popular back pain treatments but still struggle with pain?

Over 30 years of working as a Physio I have heard this story almost weekly. And there is a good reason why!

The cause of 99% of all back pain conditions I have seen have one thing in common... Muscle Imbalances.

In my previous post I discussed 'muscle imbalances' are almost always the TRUE CAUSE people develop back pain!

These muscle imbalances can create 4 main types of what is known as 'Physical Dysfunctions', one of them is known as the 'Forward Tilted Pelvis' Physical Dysfunction, the most commonly seen.

When I say muscle imbalances, opposing muscle groups are out of balance, meaning one side the muscle group has become dominant versus the opposing muscle group not doing enough work.

The common approach with back pain is getting people to strengthen their core and that should solve their pain...

So why do most people still have pain eventhough they put a lot of work in strengthening their core?

And especially those with 'Forward Tilted pelvis' dysfunction (muscle imbalances specific for this dysfunction) usually tell me it only got worse!!

As a generic approach to strengthening the core, people are told to do lots of PLANK EXERCISES, but...

With a 'Forward Tilted Pelvis' dysfunction one of the muscle groups that is overly dominant are the HIP FLEXORS!

During plank exercises the hip flexors have to work hard to hold the position, thus malking the already dominant hip flexors even more dominant.

With it the structures already under incorrect stress day to day come under even more incorrect stress, thus more pain!

Work on your core but avoid the plank exercises...

BUT you can do the 'reverse plank' as does not involve activity of the HIP FLEXORS!

And keep in mind there are other muscles that are either not working enough or are too dominant. Always start only working on the muscle groups that need to get stronger, then the dominant/tight muscles naturally become less tight.

Have you been having 'spinal manipulation or adjustments' over the years, but the back pain keeps coming back?

If so, there is a good reason for this,... let me explain...

A common story I here in the Clinic almost every day is that people have been seeing a Chiropractor, Osteopath , Physiotherapist or other professional for years...
..WITHOUT lasting relief and only to find the current treatment no longer provides temporarily relief either!

This is why...

There is ONE TRUE CAUSE in 99% of back pain & sciatica cases!

MUSCLE IMBALANCES...

Pulling your spine & pelvis, thus body out of alignment!

Let me explain this in a simple 4 stage concept:

-- STAGE 1 - Muscle Imbalances --

Unbalanced Use Body Day to Day >> causing Muscle Imbalances

We all have muscle imbalances to a certain extend, some of us sit all day, some do a physical job etc.

This causes certain muscles to become weak and others become overly active, thus tighten/become stronger.

This will lead eventually to a 'tug of war' of the muscles inside the body, left versus right or front versus back, eventually leading to pulling your body out of its natural alignment.

Once this happenes you end up in the next stage...

-- STAGE 2 - Physical Dysfunctions (4 main ones) --

Going about your daily life, incorrect or access stresses are being placed on various structures.

This can carry on for years before finally, the 'last drop in the bucket analagy', a structure or structures in the spine break down!

And you end up in stage 3...

-- STAGE 3 - Spinal Condition (ie. locking joint, disc bulging) --

There are various structures that can break down, start to cause pain.

The spinal joint may lock, a disc can starts bulging etc.

All leading to symptoms...

-- STAGE 4 - SYMPTOMS --

These symptoms can be pain, pins & needles, numbness and in worst case scenario the pain can shoot down the leg - sciatica.

The problem with the Back Pain Industry is that most common / popular treatments start and ONLY focus at Stage 3 and 4.

So let me explain...

You see your chosen Manual Therapist, like a Chiropractor for example, every 2 or 3 months, have 'spinal manipulation or adjustment' and after one or more sessions you may be able to move pain free again.

He or she tells you they have adjusted or aligned your spine.

But as soon you get off the treatment couch, those muscle imbalances will pull you instantly out of alignment again.

So you go about your normal daily life, still being pulled out of alignment...
..thus those previous incorrect / excess stresses are continued being placed at various structures (the ones affect you, were treated).

Eventually the joints lock again, tghe disc bulges again and your pain comes back!

This will continue to happen...
..UNLESS...

You start concentrating on stage 1 and 2!

Something 99% of common / popular treatments don't do!

So to get lasting back pain relief we need to address the muscle imbalances.

Thus balancing the spine, pelvis and body again, to stop the ongoing incorrect / excess stresses to be placed on those structures in your spine that keep breaking down.

Worst case scenario, the spinal condition will advance to the point it becomes difficulkt to treat successfully all together.

Ask friends or family members who have had experience dealing with a health professional whom deals with and understands those muscle imbalances.

Now a lot of us are working from home, it means you might not be moving around as much, and your home desk setup (and the posture you adopt while working) might not be as good as it should be.

All this can lead to back pain...

Around the spine there are many small and large muscles that either help stabilise the spine or help it generate movement. All these muscles are in a complex conversation with the brain in order to work together and maintain your upright posture and stability when sitting and moving.

When even one of these vertebrae, discs or muscles becomes irritated, it can lead to back pain.

When you work from your laptop you have the tendency to lean forward a lot. This means you stop using the small postural muscles that control the spine’s normal curve. Over time, they become smaller, weaker, and don’t activate properly when needed.

4 TIPS TO LOOK AFTER THE HEALTH OF YOUR SPINE

1) Regular Movement

Try to give yourself a moment to move around every hour during the work day. For your spine this means gently rotating, leaning forwards, backwards and sideways. Avoid extreme ranges...

2) Good Workspace Setup

Maintain good posture, so setting up your desk, chair and home office equipment correctly is key.

It is important that your screen is directly in front of you, with the middle of your screen at eye level. Be sure to sit back in a good chair that is upright and not reclined.

Have your keyboard level, right in front of you, with your elbows by your side and at 90 degrees, ideally with wrists supported too. Make sure your feet are also flat on the floor in front of you.

3) Upright Neutral Posture

Try to avoid leaning forwards. Maybe even get your partner or a friend to check your posture from the side. If you look hunched over, are leaning forwards, or craning your neck back to see your screen, then you have a high chance of developing spinal pain.

4) Enjoy Exercise

If you have some weak spinal stability muscles from poor posture – or not enough exercise from lockdown, some spinal exercises might help. Things like beginner level pilates exercises can help strengthen your spine.

If you find your spinal problems aren’t improving, seeing a Physiotherapist may be useful to get specific exercises tailored to you.

Ever wondered why your back or neck pain keeps coming back?
