The Mindful Eating Clinic My pragmatic, therapeutic coaching resolves unhelpful patterns of eating: dieting/overeating yo-yo, emotional eating, bulimia & binge eating.

By abandoning quick fix approaches, improving nutrition and eating more mindfully, you can lose weight and keep it off. I had years of yo-yo dieting but learned that the best way to overcome this destructive rollercoaster was to forget dieting all together. This approach helped me balance my relationship with food so successfully that I took several diplomas and have set up the Clinic to help others. Through the Clinic I offer personal coaching, programmes and online courses to help you finally get to grips with your eating - overcome emotional and comfort eating, stop thinking like a serial dieter and eat normally. There really is no need to panic if you've eaten more than usual this weekend. Here are my top six tips to help you feel less anxious about it:

1. Breathe, smile and be grateful for the food and the happy social times
2. Resume mindful and nourishing eating, one meal at a time - eat the rainbow!
3. Gently move your body, just enough to reconnect and with no thought of burning excess calories
4. Don’t diet or weigh yourself - absolutely please don't!
5. Allow your body to reset itself, have faith in its ability to stabilise after what is just a few days' overeating
6. Wear comfortable clothes for a day or two, clothes which make you feel good and you like yourself in.

This is the best advice I can give you. Take if from me, as someone who would go crazy on all the forbidden foods at every festive occasion and then diet immediately afterwards, full of regret and unhappiness. I did this every time, for years and years. Then I began to incorporate the steps above, with the important addition of regular self care. I learned to eat differently and be much kinder to myself.

Now I just have as much Easter chocolate as I like because I know it's not off limits the rest of the time. This means I don’t binge on it at all. I have bigger meals which I enjoy with friends and family, I sit and chill and relax with not much exercise. Then I don’t weigh myself afterwards but just go back to eating my normal nourishing meals, with no adjustment and definitely no recrimination or regret about the days before. It's flipping liberating!

Had a run of less than helpful eating? Just make your plate as rainbow as possible…breathe and return to your desired normal. I find a plate like this is a great reset for me, putting me back in touch with textures and flavours of nourishing food and helping my blood sugar balance.

Breakfast today - simple baked eggs. This recipe and many others are in my kitchen friendly Boosting Breakfasts Book. It’s ring bound so it folds really easily and it’s A4 size which makes it easy to read at a distance when you have two hands full doing cooking things!!

It's not your fault - diets are pretty impossible to stick to. So how about thinking differently about how you eat? By that I mean that your eating behaviour is something you do, not something you are. And if it's something you do, it can be changed, can't it?

At the Clinic we don't talk about labels, we talk about behaviours. We unlock them and break them down, where they came from, how they serve us. We change our thinking around them, we focus on moving forward. We do something different, something liberating, something we never thought was possible...

If it has, you're undoubtedly not alone. You may have started your new diet regime really well in January, full of enthusiasm and determination that this year was going to be the one where you'll lose loads of weight and feel much happier.

Maybe into February it continued to go quite well but then the weight loss may have started to slow down. Or the restriction might all have been too much and you found yourself overeating and enjoying the relief! Your confidence may have dwindled, and by March, your brain and body is telling you to give up. You may even have gone back to your old eating habits and felt more despondent than ever.

It's such a common merry-go-round and it's flipping exhausting! I did it for over 40 years so I understand... But I jumped off the ride and never got back on. I did it through learning how to understand why I ate the way I did, by eating mindfully, by improving my nutrition and by getting to a place of acceptance of my body. I forgave myself and understood the mechanics of dieting and realised that it was never, ever going to sort my disordered eating or poor body image.

So it is possible to live much happier with food if you stop dieting. To live a life where the only merry-go-round you get on is at the funfair (where you know the ride will stop and you can get off!

When I say it's magic, it isn't really. It can be quite difficult at times but these are the seven elements which can 'magically' work to help you return to a healthy weight AND maintain it.

Sometimes it can seem like magic to my clients because of their long histories of unhappy relationships with food. Many of my weight loss clients are at the end of their tether. They have tried everything and they are short on self-esteem, strength and solutions. But I don't mind being anyone's last resort!

So, the magic 7 are:
🌱Problem solving - taking practical steps to aid success.
🌱Cognitive changes - disrupting the thinking which drives poor eating habits.
🌱Little steps - small changes which are doable and promote confidence.
🌱No weight goal - really? YES, really!
🌱Breakfast - starting the day with the right food to stabilise glucose and improve eating patterns.
🌱Nutrition - understanding what to eat to help the body to help you.
🌱Exercise - getting the body moving to improve mental health and metabolism.

The number 7 is lucky for many people. But there's no luck involved here and not much magic either to be honest. My 'magic' 7 are carefully judged, given as and when needed and they work!

Keeping it simple, eating the rainbow, balancing the plate. Three things to keep mindful and your nutrition will improve dramatically.

FOODIE STUFF: Mixed salad leaves, including spinach and watercress, hard boiled egg, avocado, cherry tomatoes, pistachios, sunflower seeds, olive oil and balsamic glaze, sprinkle of Aleppo pepper and seasoning. Served with a couple of rough oatcakes - perfect!

Helping you find a happy life with food...

What is it all about? I set up mindful eating lori after successfully conquering decades of disordered eating. I now help over-eaters of all habits and behaviours change their eating patterns for good and, if they are carrying excess weight, to lose it naturally. I help people who need to lose weight for medical reasons or who just want to be more healthy in their food choices. I can help you get off the destructive dieting wagon so that you can learn to trust yourself to find an intuitive way of eating. Living is more fulfilling if you can find a happy life with food. Why me? My own experiences mean that I understand much about where you might be at the moment. I know what it is to feel really terrible because of ‘bad’ food choices it has seemed impossible to resist; I know the disappointment of failing on yet another new eating regime. I understand how upsetting it is to let the weight get out of control through being disconnected with what we’re eating and the destruction of being lost in a negative pattern of eating behaviour. I’ve been a business coach for over 15 years and now I use the skills I have learned to help people develop to create a plan of lasting and sustainable change. I am now training to be a Nutrition Advisor and this means that I can also give you sound advice about eating in a balanced, healthy way to support the other advice I will provide. How can you do it? For some people, the frameworks on my site, blog posts and typical foods may be enough and if so, then I'm really pleased. Others may need personal coaching for me to help you work through your own individual stories and tap into what you need for your own set of personal circumstances.
