Three years ago, this patient faced a likely road to below-knee amputation due to infected avascular necrosis of the talus.
Instead, Mr Nanavati and his team pursued limb salvage reconstruction with an OrthoSolutions UK Ltd 3d printed hindfoot fusion cage mixed with pelvic iliac crest bone grafting and BONESUPPORT AB Cerament.
For the past 18 months, he has been back at work as full-time builder — with a solid fusion and a functional limb observed at 3 year follow up (compared with the inital 6 week post op xray).
Beyond the surgical outcome, this is a reminder of what limb salvage really delivers:
• Independence instead of disability
• Employment instead of long-term welfare dependence
• Contribution to society instead of lifelong healthcare expenditure
When patients return to work, they repay the investment many times over — economically, socially, and personally.
Complex reconstruction is not simply a clinical decision. It is a health-system and societal investment which couldn’t be performed without the help of a specialist MDT including highly skilled anaesthetists.
