Finding personal growth through volunteering.

BS is a 38-year-old volunteer who brings real lived-experience to his role at ROADS. Having overcome his own challenges with both drug and alcohol use, he now gives his time to help others feel seen, supported, and motivated.

"My motivation around volunteering within this sector is based on the understanding and the belief that everyone can make positive changes, and I enjoy being part of making the difference to someone wanting to make them." BS

He plays a vital role in promoting harm reduction, recovery groups, and access to support across the wider Rotherham recovery community.

Recovery is possible, and powerful.

DF is a 63-year-old volunteer at ROADS. He spent over 20 years facing challenges with alcohol and drug use, but with the right support, he turned his life around - and now he’s helping others do the same.

A former steelworks manager, DF went back into education during recovery, gaining new qualifications and confidence. These days, he brings real-life experience, empathy, and energy to everything he does at ROADS.

"I have learnt to build trust with clients through group and face-to-face engagement, the setting of personal and group boundaries and supporting clients to find a better lifestyle. Volunteering has helped me learn more about substance misuse, professional boundaries and active listening skills that I can use in everyday life."

Being there for your loved one - and for others.

VW is a 46-year-old woman who brings both professional and personal experience to her volunteering role at ROADS.

Having supported a loved one through treatment for substance misuse, she understands the impact addiction can have on families.

"I came to ROADS as a volunteer in December 2024. This job was a complete career change, and I wanted to gain experience in the role of a substance misuse worker. From leaving school until I was 40yrs old I worked in care homes caring for the elderly." VW

VW began volunteering in December 2024 as part of a career change and has since been actively involved in various areas of the service.

In a short time, VW has undergone training in various areas and skills, such as issuing Naloxone to clients and external professionals, BBV testing, drug screening, needle exchange, peer mentoring, and co-facilitating group sessions.

As part of World Hepatitis Day, we’re here to support you. If you’re a client of our services, speak to your recovery worker in confidence to learn how you can get tested.

Your health matters. Take the first step today. 💛

"I realised I had to want to stop for me, as I deserve a better life, not just those around me. When you want to do it for you...you will succeed.”

Zoe suffered from three decades of alcohol dependency, which led to multiple detox and rehab attempts. Her turning point came when she met a new partner - now fiance - and gained a step-daughter. She reached out to ROADS in 2021, and by January 2023 knew she needed intensive help.

Through the ROADS to Rehab programme, she prepared for treatment and attended groups, and secured a place in a residential centre. After six months of treatment, she graduated in January 2024, and hasn’t had a drink in two years.

We know that people enjoy winding down at the pub after work, it’s ingrained in our culture - but if you’ve decided to cut back on alcohol, that familiar routine can suddenly feel a lot more challenging. That’s where setting clear boundaries comes in. They’re one of the most powerful tools you have to stay on track with your goals.

🚨 Make people aware - Talk to people about your new relationship with alcohol and why it’s important to you. Helping people to understand can help them respect your boundaries.
🔍 Know your triggers - There may be particular places or people that have encouraged you to drink in the past. Identity these triggers and you can learn how to manage them.
🙅 Be prepared to say no - If you don’t want to, it’s ok to say no.
🤗 Create a support network - It’s important to have a supportive circle around you when things get challenging.
❓ Remember why - When things are tough, go back to the reason why you made this change.

Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. Get in touch with the ROADS team on 0808 1753981. We’re WithYou every step of the way.
