Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham Hospice Adding more life to every day. Rotherham Hospice delivers compassionate, personalised care for all, wherever it’s needed.

Join us in making every moment count. “Living Life’s Wishes” – your hospice, your community, your choice. Rotherham Hospice exists to ease the physical and emotional pain of death and dying for everyone in our community, guided by our 2024–2030 strategy, Living Life’s Wishes, our promise to add more life to every day and ensure a dignified death for all, wherever and however people choose to be cared for. Serving a borough of approximately 265,000 residents, around 19% aged 65+, we support about 1,700 patients and their loved ones each year. Our full spectrum of services includes a 14-bed inpatient unit, 24/7 Hospice at Home, day hospice services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, adult and children’s bereavement support (including Sunbeams for young people), counselling, spiritual care, and innovative therapies, all provided free of charge, tailored to each person’s needs, values and beliefs. As an independent charity, we receive just 37% of our funding from the NHS, a proportion that is expected to decline as costs rise. We rely on the generosity of our local community and volunteers to keep care free at the point of need, ensuring everyone in Rotherham can access compassionate, high-quality support when it matters most. We are proud to be rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, the highest possible judgement. The CQC praised our “kind, caring and compassionate” staff, our “clear strategic vision, modernised governance and open, inclusive culture,” and recognised us as the only regional hospice offering the full spectrum of care, free of charge. As the CQC wrote:

“It was impressive to see the lengths they went to, to ensure care was personalised at a really difficult time in people’s lives. Staff took a genuine interest in people’s wellbeing, which resulted in both positive outcomes and feedback. All the staff at Rotherham Hospice should be very proud of the care they’re now delivering for people using the service and their local community. Other services can look at this report and learn how to make significant improvements to provide outstanding care.”

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day — a moment to recognise the strength, compassion and resilience of women everywhere.

From those who care, lead and support, to those whose stories are quietly powerful, women shape our communities in countless ways.

At our hospice, we see that strength every day — in our patients, families, staff, volunteers and supporters. Today, we’re proud to stand alongside women, honour their experiences, and reaffirm our commitment to dignity, equality and compassionate care for all 💜✨

£10,000 and counting for Rotherham Hospice! 🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

A huge thank you to Ben Pankovics, who has now raised an incredible £10,022 for Rotherham Hospice through a series of fundraising challenges.

Ben began fundraising after seeing first-hand the care and support our team provided to his partner’s stepdad, Paul Slack, and their family. Wanting to give something back, he set himself the challenge of getting fitter while raising money to support hospice care in our community.

Since then, Ben has taken on everything from a 50-mile bike ride, the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and half marathons in Sheffield and Leeds, to running the Leeds 1.5k with his son, organising a Christmas football card, and he’s currently training for the London Landmarks Half Marathon.

All of that effort has added up to more than £10,000 raised so far – and he’s not stopping there. Ben’s goal is to raise £50,000 for the hospice before he turns 40.

You can support Ben’s challenge here:

And if you’re nearby, Ben will be hosting a fundraising stall at Asda Dalton on 15 March – pop along and say hello!

Ben, thank you for going the extra mile (quite literally) to help us add more life to every day for people living with a terminal illness and the people around them. 🧡

This morning, on , I want to pause and say something publicly about the people who make Rotherham Hospice what it is...

I have the privilege of seeing this organisation from every angle. I see the financial reports, the funding gaps and the economic pressures that charities like ours are navigating. I see the rising demand for care. I see the careful planning, the difficult decisions and the responsibility that comes with leading a service where only part of our costs are funded and the rest must be raised by our community.

But far more importantly, I see our people!

I see our nurses and care assistants sitting quietly at a bedside, protecting dignity in someone’s final hours. I see our doctors bringing clinical expertise and calm leadership in the most complex situations. I see our Hospice at Home teams driving across Rotherham in all weathers so that someone can remain where they feel safest. I see our counselling, therapy and wellbeing teams helping families navigate grief that feels impossible.

I see our retail, café and fundraising colleagues generating the essential income that keeps our services running. I see our volunteers, giving their time, energy and kindness so generously, strengthening everything we do and reminding us that this hospice truly belongs to its community.

And I also see the teams who are often in the background but are absolutely essential cogs in our engine. Our HR, Finance and Training and Development teams, supporting our people properly, keeping us compliant, paying everyone accurately and helping staff to grow. Our housekeeping team, creating the calm, clean and welcoming environment that patients and families feel the moment they walk through the door. Our facilities team, keeping everything safe, maintained and ready, often fixing problems before anyone else even realises they exist.

The work is emotionally demanding. It is complex. It can be relentless.

And yet our teams continue to show up with compassion, professionalism and extraordinary humanity.

Recently, one family wrote to us and said:

“You didn’t just care for him. You cared for all of us. You made the hardest days of our lives feel safe.”

That is what our people do. Every single day.

In one of the toughest economic climates in recent years, when costs are rising and uncertainty is constant, our staff and volunteers continue to adapt, innovate and support one another. They continue to put patients and families first. They continue to live out our promise of Living Life’s Wishes in ways that are both visible and unseen.

As CEO, I could not be prouder.

To every member of staff and every volunteer across Rotherham Hospice, THANK YOU! Your work matters. Your compassion matters. And this community is stronger because of you.

Today is simply an opportunity to say that clearly and publicly 🧡

With pride and gratitude,

Mat
