Varicose veins can present with a range of symptoms beyond visible enlarged veins. While often not dangerous, certain signs may indicate underlying venous insufficiency and should be properly assessed.
𦡠Persistent fatigue or heaviness in the legs
π§ Swelling around the ankles or lower legs
π₯ Burning, throbbing, or itching sensations
π¨ Skin colour changes, including brown staining (haemosiderin staining)
πΏ Venous eczema or skin irritation
π©Ή A healed or non-healing leg ulcer (a wound lasting more than two weeks)
A comprehensive clinical review, including a venous Duplex ultrasound scan, allows detailed assessment of vein function and structure. Persistent leg pain or swelling should always be evaluated, as it can occasionally signal more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis.
Simple supportive measures such as leg elevation, regular movement, and professionally fitted compression hosiery (when advised) may help relieve symptoms.
Patients are typically seen within two weeks of referral for consultant-led assessment.
