Christmas, family dynamics, and the pressure to have it all 'perfect' can take a toll.
The festive season can be wonderful, but it can also bring pressure, fatigue and frayed nerves. Here are practical tips to protect your wellbeing this Christmas:

• Set boundaries: it’s OK to say no, trim your to-do list, and protect downtime – embrace the JOMO (joy of missing out).

• You don’t need to buy a present for everyone and their dog. 🐕

• Plan your time and pace yourself; build in rest and quiet moments. Try to reconnect with what you actually want and enjoy.

• Choose a few meaningful traditions and keep budgets realistic.

• Look after your own wellbeing: prioritise sleep, movement and mindful breathing.

• If spending time all together becomes tense, communicate calmly using “I” statements; agree on a polite time-out if conversations heat up.

• Reach out for support from a trusted friend or family member or seek professional help if needed.

If stress becomes overwhelming, you’re not alone. In the UK you can contact Samaritans on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258 for confidential support.

Wishing you comfort and care this festive season.

At times – like Christmas when togetherness is celebrated lonely feelings can really hit hard.

Loneliness is an issue that can affect the physical and mental wellbeing of people of all ages.

While addressing your experience of loneliness may take time, taking steps to build new and improve existing connections will help to improve your health and overall wellbeing.

We explore some ways to help combat loneliness, from helping others to why we shouldn't be comparing ourselves to others.

Make some new connections! Meeting like-minded people through community groups or hobbies is a great way to manage loneliness.

• Stop comparing yourself to others. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a real thing, and it will help to remember that people are only sharing what they want the world to see about their lives, so don’t ‘compare and despair’.

• Volunteering – we’ve shared some lovely stories of the positive effects of volunteering recently, and it’s a great way to give back and find community.

• Communication! Reach out to friends and relatives, and if getting out is difficult, try the phone or video calls and emails to stay in touch. You might find it hard to do this though, so remember:

• Take it slow: being surrounded by people can be overwhelming, so bear that in mind and choose small steps, like an outdoors activity you can get busy with.

• Get a pet: a dog will get you out and give you an excuse to talk to people, it will also provide companionship, after all, a dog is ‘man’s best friend’. 🐕

Brighten up the festive season with the whole family, no matter how far apart you are. Here are some joyful ideas to keep generations connected and smiling: 👨🏾‍🤝‍👨🏽👩‍👩‍👦👨‍👨‍👧‍👦

• When you’re together in real life, bring out nostalgic items like photos, precious toys, or mementos from long-lost relatives to share and treasure. 🧸

• Do a fun group activity or set up a simple jigsaw that everyone can join in on during the holidays. 🧩

• If online isn’t always easy, start a short weekly video chat or a 20-minute game night to weave connection into your holiday rhythm. Easy family quizzes are a great, lighthearted option. ❔

• Have younger relatives teach you a new tech trick—whether it’s a fun game, a video filter, or a quick photo tip—so learning becomes a shared, reciprocal joy. 🖥

• If you can’t speak on Christmas Day, record a merry message or voice note for everyone to enjoy. 💬

• Stay safe and comfortable: use trusted family accounts, tweak simple privacy settings, and keep a quick phone backup in case a video call drops. With a little planning, tech can be a warm, festive bridge across generations.

What sort of exercises do women need to consider in later life? 🤔

Jan Vickery, tells us a little about the different focus needed for the best activities as we age.

A good exercise programme includes a combination of cardiovascular, strengthening, stretching and balance exercises. However, evidence suggests that women should focus on strengthening in their exercising as they get older. Resistance training improves muscle strength and has been shown to improve bone health. As women get older this helps to them to stay physically independent and reduces the risk of falls.

Jan shows us some basic exercises: squats for your quad muscles, leg raises, and heel-to-toe walking or standing on one leg for core balance.

If you’re not keen on a specific exercise plan, then activities such as walking can be a great way to cover a number of different types of exercise, so don’t worry if you don’t always do as much as you’d like. The fact you are trying is what matters.

What happens at an NHS health check? 🤔

If you’re aged 40-75 you’re eligible for an NHS Health Check. Join registered nurse from the AXA Health 24/7 health support line for members, Jo Poolman, for a guide to getting a medical MOT.

Learn more about getting a health check: https://www.axahealth.co.uk/staying-healthy/ageing-well/what-is-a-health-check-or-mot/

The NHS Health Check is a free overall health check that can be carried out at your local GP, and in some pharmacies. As Jo explains, Health Checks are carried out by a nurse in most cases and will include being asked questions about your lifestyle habits and family medical history as well as measuring height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Receiving results during the check in the form of a risk score, a Health Check is a valuable way to identify early symptoms of what could become larger health problems, which helps you stay on top of your health.

Age and experience can be liberating! 🙌

Jan Vickery, Propositions Lead and chartered physiotherapist, tells us a little about the advantages of a healthy attitude to staying active as you age.

Creating realistic expectations of yourself and making sure you’re doing something that you actually enjoy to keep active is really important.

Set achievable targets for goals that matter to you. Targets that are too high will make it easy to give up when you can’t reach that level. Targets don’t always need to be about numbers, they can also be about how you want to feel as a result of an activity. And remember there will be ups and downs if you are focussing on reaching a specific target.

As Jan says: “the secret to success is choosing an exercise currency that works for you”. Then you’ll want to get out and take part – and the habit will be sustainable.
