This lady wanted to wear open-toe shoes to her son's wedding but didn't like the appearance of her nail. Here I made her prosthetic nail out of silver impregnated medical grade acrylic carefully blended to match the colour of neighbouring nails. She can shape, trim or paint it and it should last for weeks if not months.

Your big toe needs to be able to bend upwards in order for your foot to become a rigid lever to push off, if it can't your brain finds alternative pathways which can manifest as altered gait, sore little toes, nail issues, corns, hard skin, knee and maybe hip pain. Often Podiatrists can improve big toe function with a combination of footwear changes or insoles, exercises and mobilisation. If you suspect your big toes may be an issue, there may be a tell tale bit of callus on its underside, book an appointment to see me 😊

Planes of Motion .... When we consider trying to correct gait, foot posture issues and causes of foot pain we need to consider the planes and axis of motion. Feet move in 3 planes of motion and have multiple axes - sometimes it takes a relatively small adjustment in just the right place to have a large beneficial effect.

Pain down the outside of your leg, round the back of your outside ankle bone and on the knobbly bit on the outside of your foot. Not very common but yesterday I had 3 separate patients with this all with slightly different causes.

One patient had been to 2 podiatrists and a physio with no resolution - the key to resolving this and any condition is understanding the causation behind the injury. One patient had been given orthoses (insoles) which would have had zero effect in her case until motor control and posture was worked on. This is why looking at the whole person is so important and partnering with other allied health professionals when needed is so necessary. So if you have a stubborn pain that isn't shifting it means the cause has not been established, that's when I come in, like a biomechanics detective breaking down the cause and not just treating symptoms.

Last week was a bit bonkers! Super busy with early starts and late finishes! I welcomed 9 new patients as well treating many regular routine care patients. I am lucky to receive a lot of referrals from FHPs (Foot Health Practitioners), Physios and Osteopaths for patients with complex pain conditions, injuries, gait issues, infections and ingrown nails that require surgery. Podiatrists are able to diagnose, supply antibiotics and a range of prescription only medications, make functional insoles and braces, use anaesthetic and perform nail surgery. Looking forward to seeing what this week brings! 6 new patients to meet this week so far; looking forward to helping them get back to doing what they love!

This week brings us the Chinese New Year and the Chinese Zodiac of the Fire 🔥 Horse. The last Fire Horse year was 1966, the year of my birth, so I am a Fire Horse too. Fire Horses bring change, energy, work ethic, action and perhaps a little volatility. Buckle up and saddle up, because this year could be a bumpy ride but we could all do with a change right?

If the going gets tough though, acupuncture and quell and calm your body and mind, it can prepare you for the tasks ahead, so if you are feeling a little out of control, come and visit to rein that horse in and set you back on track. 😊
