💜 Understanding the Link Between Neurodivergence & Eating Disorders💜
There is a well-established connection between neurodivergence and eating disorders, and it is important that this relationship is understood with care, compassion and respect.
Many neurodivergent young people experience differences in sensory processing, emotional regulation, anxiety and thinking styles. These differences can influence how a person experiences food, mealtimes and their body.
For some individuals, eating difficulties may develop as part of their response to stress, sensory overload, emotional distress or a need for predictability and routine. These experiences are not choices, and they are not behaviours to be judged — they are meaningful responses to how someone is experiencing the world.
When these underlying needs are not fully recognised or supported, eating difficulties can become more entrenched and, for some, may develop into an eating disorder.
This is why it is essential that support for eating disorders is neurodiversity-informed, trauma-aware and person-centred — focusing not only on eating behaviours, but on the individual’s emotional wellbeing, sensory needs, communication style and environment.
At Enhancing Futures, we work alongside young people and families to build understanding, provide tailored support and create pathways towards recovery and wellbeing.
Everyone deserves care that respects who they are 💛
