Meet Laurie Petch who is an Educational Psychologist at the Purple House Clinic Nottingham. Laurie has over 20 years experience. Can you briefly describe your area of expertise and the type of clients you usually work with?

I specialise in children with neurodevelopmental conditions - autism, ADHD, dyslexia -and those affected by trauma or insecure attachment. My goal is to look beyond the diagnosis and understand each child's specific strengths and needs.

What is your approach to working with clients - do you follow any specific models or techniques?

I focus on the lived experience of the child and parent. We work together to understand the situation and design solutions that help. I draw on Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Theraplay, cognitive behavioural therapy and narrative approaches, but collaboration is central.

How does being part of a multidisciplinary team benefit the people you work with?

You don't have to search for different specialists. If concerns arise about adult mental health, we involve Clinical Psychology; for sensory issues, an Occupational Therapist; for communication, a Speech and Language Therapist. This immediate access means we can respond quickly and see the whole picture.

Why do you think it's important for services like this to be accessible in a local, community-based setting?

Families need one place to turn to, not a series of referrals. We provide support in one location, reducing stress and fragmentation for families and schools across the East Midlands.
