We know it has been a very emotional, jarring, and frankly triggering whiplash of global suffering these last few years - experienced most intensely by survivors of complex trauma. As we sink into the cozier autumn activities of a world just trying to find tethers to normalcy, we wanted to take a timeout and offer the best foundational tools for stability we've got - and not only for trauma survivors, but everyone!
Grounding is a vital skill that keeps us present and in the here and now. Even in times we'd rather not be, grounding vitally relieves us of distressing memories, intrusive thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and unsafe impulses. It places us back into our bodies and minds, connects us with our surroundings, and allows us to regain better control of our feelings, focus, and physical safety. Even better, it also allows us to have FUN - to feel vibrant joy and true laughter, and be fully connected in our relationships.
Here, we share me about what grounding is and why it’s important, but also present a list of 101 Grounding Techniques to try and use – yes, really 101! We want to remove the guesswork and provide a resource you can turn to even in time you can’t even think.

ℹ️🌿 WHY CAN’T I REMEMBER MY TRAUMA? A TRAUMA THERAPIST EXPLAINS |

Your brain’s main priority during trauma is to protect you and keep you safe.
When you face danger or overwhelming stress, your brain shifts into survival mode. The parts of your brain responsible for thinking clearly and recording memories temporarily take a backseat, allowing the survival-focused parts to take control.

This survival response means your brain doesn’t record memories in the same way it usually does. Instead of creating clear, chronological memories, it focuses on helping you survive the moment.

This is why trauma memories often feel fragmented or different from everyday memories—they were created when your brain was operating in survival mode.

Such a true perspective on how healing works. I often have clients asking me how long it will take to feel better, or if it's even possible... My answer to the first is 'I have no idea' and to the second 'Yes! Absolutely!'
But it's always going to be a work in progress...🌀

Often they say they are scared to face what lies hidden, and trust me I know that fear so well. It's one of the scariest things to face your darkness within, your wounds, your pain... And so scary to trust and hope that change will come... When we have no proof...
We have to let go of what we thought would be a good life, what society taught us and wants us to chase...
And find our very own definition of a good life... One that works for us, that aligns with our beliefs. One that is our truth...
One that brings freedom...🪷

I've also realised that I can read a book and still plan stuff🫣 then realising I have no idea what I've just read...

True resting and relaxing is an art many of us have lost in our busy life styles.... To 'just' be doesn't come that easy... It needs determination and perseverance... And it needs gentleness and compassion when we can't reach it. It's like training a muscle... In the beginning we start with very brief and gentle exercise... Rest just for a moment, be mindful just for a few seconds, pause just to acknowledge something simple... It will get easier and the moments of rest will get longer✨🌀🩵

I did her course years ago and found it incredibly insightful... Then I had to do the work. I've discovered layers upon layers of parts within myself who communicate through pain and inflammation in my body. It's been a hard journey to learn and listen to what my body has to say.... To face the trauma that lies underneath the facade of 'okay'. But taking my time to understand this unique language has brought me freedom. The freedom that only comes with the knowledge of who you really are... The knowledge of the truth... It came with pain that was at times so much harder than the physical pain... It came with such deep grief and sorrow that words can't reach.
But, after years of hard work I'm getting pretty good at listening to my body and acknowledging the voices of my parts who can't yet communicate directly with me. I accept that sometimes the only way of communicating something important is through pain and inflammation... Because, often, there are no words...
I notice the signs early nowadays... And I can meet the pain with gentleness, kindness and self - compassion...
What I've learned on the way is that our body and mind are incredibly clever, and that for deep healing we need to acknowledge both, and start to listen lovingly 🩵
