I’m delighted to share that I’ve recently completed the “Art of Shonishin” course with the inspiring Thomas Wernicke.

Shonishin is a specialised, non-invasive Japanese paediatric acupuncture technique suitable for children from infancy through adolescence.

Using small, purpose-designed tools, it involves gentle tapping, stroking, and rubbing of the skin to stimulate the body’s energetic systems. This approach can support a range of conditions, including eczema, colic, sleep disturbances, allergies, and asthma, while also helping to strengthen the immune system and promote calm.

Thomas, alongside his wife and teaching partner Karin, travelled from Germany to the UK to share their deep knowledge and experience of this beautifully gentle method of treating children.

I’m proud to now be a Certified Shonishin Acupuncturist, with certification recognised by the Japanese Society for Paediatric Acupuncture.

Autism awareness month is about:
Awareness
Understanding
Inclusion

Let's create space where people with autism are safe, welcomed and able to be exactly who they are.

Multiple studies and meta-analyses have reported improvements in ASD-related symptoms when acupuncture is used as a complementary therapy, improving wellbeing and opportunities to thrive.

Significant improvements have been noted in social interaction, verbal communication, and language comprehension.

Research indicates potential gains in self-care abilities, attention span, and fine motor skills.

Some trials found reductions in repetitive behaviours, irritability, and hyperactivity.

Improvements in emotion-related behaviour, including reduced anxiety and better sleep, have been documented by parents.

The Five Elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood) play an important role in Chinese Medicine theory. We all have all the Elements within us. The Five Element theory is that each person has a predominant element that dictates their physical and emotional tendencies.

We are now in Spring, the season associated with the Wood Element.

I now see children in the clinic most weeks. When you treat the child it's also about shaping the adult they will become. Treating children is about building a strong foundation for their health.

From newborn to teenage years, acupuncture aims to resolve children’s health imbalances as they arise, and can be used as an adjunct to conventional paediatric care.

As a member of HOPA, the Hub Of Paediatric Acupuncture, I would encourage any parent who is considering acupuncture for their child to view the HOPA website and social media, to help you decide if acupuncture is the right treatment for your child.

The HOPA Vodcast has had a glow-up!

What began as the humble Hub of Paediatric Acupuncture Vodcast has grown into a fully fledged podcast – with a brand new name:
🎙️ Nurturing the Young: The Pediatric Acupuncture Podcast

The big news? You can now listen to Nurturing the Young on Spotify (and your other favourite podcast platforms soon)! https://open.spotify.com/show/61r6NJEM4MlQXPytdx1R26?si=oXoBRrCQSp-30ZTMH7TjBw

Through real, honest conversations with practitioners, healers, and child-focused professionals, we dive into what it means to truly support the youngest among us. Expect authenticity over polish, curiosity over certainty – and stories that reflect the beautiful unpredictability of working with children.

All videos of the episodes remain completely free – for members and non-members – over at the HOPA Practitioner Hub. And we’ve now added audio-only versions there too, if you’d rather listen from there.

We’re so excited to make these conversations more available and accessible to more of you. We can't wait to hear what you think, so please do comment, share, subscribe and like so that we get feedback about the conversations you enjoy most!

Acupuncture for New Parents

In the past 18 months, my circle of friends has celebrated the arrival of 6 new babies. As a result, I've had a lot of conversations about how acupuncture treatment can help support new parents, body, mind and spirit.

Benefits for new parents:

Emotional & Mental Well-being
Acupuncture can help reduce symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety by regulating neurotransmitters and releasing endorphins.

Physical Recovery
It can aid in the healing of the body after birth by reducing pain, improving blood flow, and replenishing lost energy.

Breastfeeding Support
The practice may help stimulate milk production and reduce issues like mastitis by interacting with the nervous and endocrine systems.

Improved Sleep
Acupuncture can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle and promote relaxation, leading to more restful sleep.

Self-Care
The treatment provides a dedicated time and space for new parents to focus on themselves amidst the demands of a newborn.

My son started his acupuncture treatment nearly three years ago at The Little Health Hub clinic in Oxford. This wonderful clinic offers low-cost and free acupuncture to babies, children, and teenagers.

As a not-for-profit community clinic, they’ve supported hundreds of families — many facing real financial hardship — by making high-quality, paediatric acupuncture care accessible to all.

The clinic has recently lost key funding that would have helped us keep going and are at risk of closing. If you would like to help please donate to their fundraiser https://gofund.me/b2666a032
and share this with friends, family or your community.

My passion is primarily to treat babies, children, and teenagers in my clinics; and secondarily it is to raise awareness among parents about the potential of Chinese medicine for their children.

I find that young people respond well and quickly to acupuncture. Starting treatments early in life can help prevent or reduce health issues in adulthood.

Every week Tuesday to Friday I'm at Therapy Rooms Rugby.

The clinic is home to a dedicated group of highly trained, independent therapists who specialise in acupuncture, physiotherapy, emotional wellbeing therapy and more for adults, teenagers and children of all ages.

Situated in the beautiful village of Clifton upon Dunsmore, if you're coming with your children it's the ideal spot. There's a village shop next door, a lovely playground down the road, and plenty of free and convenient parking.

I am specifically trained in paediatric acupuncture... so what is paediatrics?

Paediatrics is the branch of medicine focused on the physical, emotional, and social health of infants, children, and adolescents, typically from birth up to age 18.

Acupuncture for children is a gentle, natural and effective form of healthcare, including preventative healthcare, acute illness management, and chronic condition treatment.

My son, who is 9 years old, has acupuncture treatment to assist with symptoms related to Autism and ADHD. Initially, he attended weekly sessions, now we go twice a month.

He enjoys his visits, has only ever had non-needle techniques used, and is consistently making progress that helps ease his symptoms.

As an acupuncturist myself, I can say that these treatments at such a young age are really boosting his long-term health.

Here are the key areas where I've noticed improvement:
Communication skills.
Cognitive abilities (areas like attention, memory, language, reduced rigidity in planning).
Social interactions.
Anxiety levels.
Emotional control.
Sensory challenges - especially his sensitivity to noise.
Sleep.

The greatest impact begins with the smallest patients...
Common reasons why children come for acupuncture treatment include coughs and colds, sleep issues, digestion problems, headaches, allergies, and emotional health.

Acupuncture promotes the body's natural healing processes and can be highly effective for children.

The techniques used can differ, including specialised needle techniques as well as non-needle approaches, providing a holistic, safe, and effective form of medicine.

The greatest impact begins with the smallest patients...

At The Hub of Pediatric Acupuncture, we hold space for the quiet power of this work — the gentle touch, the unseen shifts, the light we offer with our hands and hearts.

As we move into a new season of growth, learning and connection, we’re reminded that the work we do with children sends ripples far beyond the clinic.
