Research shows nearly one in three people entitled to cervical screening – women and people with a cervix aged 25 and over do not regularly attend.

Embarrassment is the most common reason for not going, followed by people who said they kept putting it off and others who were worried it would be painful. 😳

Today marks International HPV awareness day and it’s the perfect time to shed some light on the virus and how it can affect our s*xual health.

HPV is a group of over 200 viruses that are spread by skin-to-skin contact. Most of the time HPV doesn't cause any problems but some types of HPV - the ones that are spread by s*xual contact - can increase the risk of cancer. Although usually painless, they can be unpleasant to look at and distressing for some people with the infection.

According to Breast Cancer Now, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with 1 woman diagnosed every 10 minutes.

So to commemorate , it's important to do a self-examination as it’s most easily treated when found early. Checking your breasts regularly helps you spot any changes quickly. Remember to regularly TOUCH, LOOK and CHECK your breasts in the bath or shower.

Testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 35.

To make sure that you catch any changes, it’s really important to regularly check your testicles. It’s up to you when you do it, though most people find it easier to do in the bath or shower.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that affects the skin and can easily be spread through s*xual activity.

Some people don’t experience any issues but in some cases, people can get warts or even cancer. This means it’s vital to get yourself checked out if something doesn’t feel or look right.

Some cases can be prevented with a vaccine and we offer the vaccine for free for people at higher risk of HPV including those with HIV, s*x workers and men under 45 who have s*x with men.
