🦷 Hard Munchables for Little Mouths! 🍎🥕

Did you know that hard munchable foods are an important part of your child’s feeding development?

👶 According to the SOS Approach to Feeding, introducing safe hard munchables between 6–7 months (when sitting with support) helps babies:
✔️ Develop oral motor skills
✔️ Strengthen their jaw, tongue, and lips
✔️ Explore new tastes, smells & textures safely
✔️ Reduce gagging and picky eating long-term

✨ These are not meant to be eaten, but rather gnawed, mouthed, and explored!

🧠 Think of it as a “workout” for the mouth — building strength and coordination for chewing later on!

Examples of Hard Munchables:
🥕 Raw carrot sticks (supervised!)
🍎 Whole peeled apple slices (firm)
🥒 Raw cucumber spears
🥖 Hard bread crusts
🌽 Corn on the cob (raw or lightly steamed)

💡 Always supervise! These are for oral exploration, not for actual swallowing. Choose the size/shape based on baby’s age and motor skills.

Once your baby hits 4–6 months, eating isn’t just instinct—it’s learnt! That means…

✨ You’re the teacher
✨ Food is the subject
✨ Your child is the student

Your job? 👉 Serve the food, set the schedule, and keep it chilled and relaxed
It should be enjoyable for both of you.
Your child’s job? 👉 Decide if they’re eating it (and how much). Spoiler: playing with peas counts as learning! 😄

Feeding difficulties in kids can feel overwhelming — but here’s something most people (even professionals) get wrong:

💥 Parents are only the cause in 3–7% of cases.
That means 93–97% of the time, the issue lies beneath the surface — in your child’s body and development.

So before blame or guilt creeps in, let’s zoom out. 🧠💚
Feeding is not just about behavior — it’s about:
🫀 Organs
💪 Muscles
👂 Sensory input
🧠 Development & learning
🍽️ Environment

This is why some children develop Picky Eating or Problem Feeding — especially if they face even mild medical or developmental challenges.

🌾 Dairy-free porridge or gluten-free cereals

🍼 Continue breastmilk or hypoallergenic formula as needed.



Nutrients to Watch
Your baby still needs key nutrients:
✅ Calcium – fortified dairy-free milks, tofu, beans,
✅ Vitamin D – supplements often needed
✅ Protein & Iron – lentils, poultry, beans, meat, fish, fortified breakfast cereals
✅ Healthy fats – avocado, olive oil
✅iodine - don’t delay introduce fish, fortified cereals, fortified plant base milk alternatives



Label Reading Tips
⚠️ Hidden dairy = tricky! Look out for:

Is mealtime a battle?
You’re not alone—fussy eating is incredibly common in children. But there are ways to make food fun (and less stressful)!

Here are 5 tried-and-true tips from RW Dietetics to support happier mealtimes:
1. Offer a “safe” food with every meal—something your child already likes.
2. Avoid pressure to eat—no bribes, threats or “just one more bite.”
3. Eat together as often as you can—modelling is powerful.
4. Let them get messy—exploring food builds confidence.
5. Be patient—new foods can take 10–15+ exposures before acceptance.
